James Bond stamps

The Royal Mail released a set of stamps today featuring covers from James Bond novels from the 50s to the present day - marking Ian Fleming's 100th birthday. So why are the old ones the best?

Odd, because the four Ian Flemming books I had purchased new in the mid-1990s from a discount store (Building #19) had covers that were plain with just a single silhouette and some text. They looked nothing like these covers.
I think it says more about the publisher selling different editions to different markets.
