"hookers" sounds quaint, like teenage bad girls doing tricks for a lark. Like playing "hookey" from school. This is the term that came from the Civil War general of the same name who ran a bordello in Washington DC, no wonder it sounds old fashioned. But no, that legend of General Hooker being the origin is not true, it may be as old as the 16th century.
