Cool. I was afraid there weren't going to be any music videos shot with cell phones today.

Changing the self loathing character of the song in something uplifting. Not using the word 'creep'. Is it still a cover then?

Actually I heard about his performance from friends who went and would love to see the video of him doing creep. Oh well. To late I guess. No bit torrent action either, so far....................................

Thankfully, there's plenty of other videos of the performance that aren't down yet.

Let the cartoonish fly-swatting from copyright holders to enthusiastic fans commence.

It is actually interesting doing a google search for this video and ALL the websites just link to youtube ... and of course they are all gone. Here is an audio of it:

but video would have been nice.

If you think about it it's kind of suprising some of the stuff we link to stays up as long as it does.

Not like I wanted to hear Prince do "Creep" anyway... well, maybe a little.

this seems kind of fail, despite my interest in seeing itp

Well, that MP3 suggests that it's pretty sweet. Prince rules, as usual. I love his cock-rocking, showboating performance in this cover.
posted by Bookhouse at 10:21 PM on April 29, 2008

Prince doesn't like shit like this. He once came into the record store where I work and brought any and all bootlegs up to the counter and said, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to take these." He took them.

I was so going to post this on sunday and thought better of it. Such an awesome cover.

you can hear the audio portion on hype machine. pretty cool.
posted by tremspeed at 10:46 PM on April 29, 2008

Prince at his best is Michael Jackson, James Brown, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix all rolled up into one.
posted by empath at 10:54 PM on April 29, 2008

Pretty loose interpretation of the song. Same chord progression, sort of, but each bar is half as long as it should be.

Am I the only one who finds it funny that NPG is filing claims over a fucking cover song?! Come on, Prince.

I liked that you fought the record companies, but you're just another fucking greedhead. Prick.

And it's a cover of a song that Radiohead ripped off wholesale from The Hollies to boot!

I don't know about this Prince fellow. But I would have loved to have seen Portishead. Their new album is so dark and beautiful.

Boy this ... would have been great.
To date, this is one of my favorite Prince Moments . (Do I have to tm this or anything?) (It's the "While my guitar gently weeps" bit where he just takes it away from everyone else - simultaneously great and fucking obnoxious)

I can never forgive Prince for ruining this song with his horrible, horrible production on 'The Red Shoes'.
posted by Summer at 2:36 AM on April 30, 2008

I wonder if they rehearsed it like that, From Bklyn.

The creep video was down, but at least this prompted me to see the "While my guitar..." video again.

Awesome.

I like Prince. I generally separate the person from the music, and I have to admire his songwriting ability and showmanship. Maybe his oddness rubs some people the wrong way, but he deserves to get paid for his accomplishments and I'm sure he has a huge fan base out there.

Still waiting for Pussy Control to become available on iTunes tho'. Maybe it will never happen and I'll end up buying the album it's on on CD, but Prince, if you're reading this, please release it to iTunes, cuz I love that song.

"Prince at his best is Michael Jackson, James Brown, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix all rolled up into one."

He molests a kid, leads the police on an interstate car chase, gets shot on his front doorstep, and chokes on his own vomit?!

@From Bklyn: Ah yes, Prince's famous "disappearing guitar" trick right at the end. That really was a stunning performance, and reading the rest of the band, not entirely rehearsed, or expected. Petty's first "Look at you all" after Prince's first 16 bars sounds like he was expecting to come back in, and Prince didn't let him. Like the true professional that he is, Petty then reproduced the line three more times in order to give the sheen of pre-arrangement, but hell, when you have Prince wanting more stage time, you've got to be Bono to say "fuck off, shorty!"

Can barely muster a 'meh' for Radiohead; love Prince with the burning passion of a thousand suns made of special flammable adoration gases. Which leaves me completely stumped about whether or not to listen to this.

Sorry, whether or not 2 listen to this.

posted by jack_mo at 5:15 AM on April 30, 2008

acetonic, that's hardly a "wholesale rip-off" and, in case you were unaware, The Hollies were covering a song initially recorded by Phil Everly. Their version is way closer to the original than Radiohead's song is. (Personally, I can't stand Radiohead so I'm not trying to defend them.) And though The Hollies had the biggest hit with the track, the song's also been covered by kd lang, Semisonic, Olivia Newton-John and a few others.

If he didn't pay for them, I would have been quite inclined to kick his ass as a thief. Christ, what an asshole.

Listened to the Radiohead cover thingie and wasn't impressed. But I loved loved loved that While My Guitar Gently Weeps video. Thanks From Bklyn! You made my morning.
