belt tightening for the rich

poor little rich girls can't highlight twice a week Even the mega wealthy are feeling the pinch. "Hairstylists and private jet rental companies say the wealthy are cutting back on luxuries like $350 highlights and $10,000-an-hour jet rentals. Even nutritionists and personal trainers notice a problem. The wealthy are eating more and gaining weight because of the stress." boo-hoo-hoo

The article makes quite clear the unsympathetic nature of the situation. In fact, that's kind of the article's point, if one reads it carefully. Doing so might help one to catch points like the following:

On a spring afternoon, a half-dozen hairstylists to the very wealthy talked about how customers are stretching their $350 highlights and $150 haircuts to every eight weeks instead of six weeks. Some women are cutting out highlights entirely, saying they would "rather be brunettes."While catching such points, for the sake of accuracy, might help improve this post, a tiny bit of additional research -- like, perhaps, on the NYT's consistently myopic perspective on class in America and what various people have had to say about it -- would have made it more than a careless throwaway single-link snark about a NYT story.

I read this article yesterday and thought that there was about enough content for maybe... two whole paragraphs.

Boo hoo hoo, employees in salon laid off with fall of business. And boo hoo hoo, people who think the rich "hurting" will do anything but hurt you, too.

That seems odd, I was under the impression that rather then a general wealth reduction, what's actually been happening is that the rich are getting richer, while everyone else is feeling the pinch. That inequality has been growing.
So this article is actually at odds with what actual economic data shows. But it's never been hard to find anecdotes to fit your preconceived notions, which is what I suspect happened here.
