Sarah Palin's Daughter is Pregnant McCain knew before picking her, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

Why on earth would it disqualify her? FFS.

Yes, there are many reasons not to vote for John McCain and her, but this one is pretty far down the list.

If she's 5 months pregnant, she couldn't be Trig's mother, could she?

"The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama's name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,'" a senior aide said."

Yes, because Barack Obama and his campaign team are clearly writing all liberal blogs.

You know, I'm seriously not getting the point here. Is Palin supposed to, as part of her political career, be responsible for her daughter's sex life? The anti-abortion faction are going to see a teenager who, um, "did the right thing" instead of having an abortion, even so.

NO! The original Palin thread is approaching 1500 comments! I have a separate bookmark just for it! Don't divert future comments here!

Anyone know what the age of consent is in Alaska, and whether the father might face statutory rape charges?

This will go over well with certain natalist factions of the Republican base. For everyone else, it will be Stewart/O'Brein/Leno fodder, but probably inconsequential.

Can't help but think of this though.

Wow! McCain has realized he can win if only he inspires the trailer trash vote.

Let me check the Republican position on sex ed and get back to you.

Can someone explain why this might disqualify Palin for VP? Not being snarky (nor supportive, for that matter), I'd just like to know and I can't think of a good reason.

It's not about the Palin's private life, it's about the boatload moral contradictions being a Fundamentalist / social conservative in the 21st century engenders.

If the GOP wants to be the Party of God -- actively criminalizing and moralizing about everyone's personal affairs -- fine, but we need to be open about the social damage this is going to cause.

If you don't think that her teenage daughter decideing to keep an unwanted pregnacy will be seen as a plus to the very people Palin's selection was designed to pander to in the first place, you're a complete idiot.
posted by Cyrano at 9:52 AM on September 1, 2008

Actually, I totally recant on that - it will matter hugely to evangelicals and other religious conservatives, who will like that she didn't get an abortion and is doing the Right Thing by marrying the father, but will otherwise likely see it as a significant moral failing that reflects poorly on her mom.

It's starting to look like she was picked so the McCain campaign can be perpetually offended by the stupid speculation and mean spirited snark.

Apparently Age of Consent laws in Alaska are kinda tricksy.

I hereby predict that Bristol has a miscarriage (i.e., that this is a fake pregnancy to cover for the other fake pregnancy). I still believe the Sarah-Palin-is-Trig's-grandmother rumor.

A 17 year old girl accidentally slips and falls onto an ejaculating penis and you liberal bloggers rush to judgment with accusations of premarital sex.

Sickening.

Weirdly, they're claiming the daughter made the decision to keep the baby. That's the definition of pro-choice.
