There Was An Election Last Night?

Just ignore it, and it'll go away. Newspapers in small towns inTexas and Oklahoma neglect to report Obama win.

I'd be really mad about this, but my local paper didn't report anything about Jackson's victory over Schoen in the Kaufman County commissioner race.

The Oklahoma link goes to the cnn video front page, which is now about some Taiwanese politican getting arrested, leaving you with a less than enthralling blog entry to pin your FPP on. Shit post.

For me it goes to a clip about that local newspaper and a short interview with the publisher and some "man on the street" soundbites. Which seems to be just as intended.

Yeah, the "Oklahoma" link works fine for me too.

We didn't vote for Obama in Muskogee,
We don't want no blacks ruling over me,
We don't read no bad news in the papers,
We didn't descend from apes living in no tree.

But we're proud to elect a moron to the White House,
A President who was just as dumb as us,
And if that Obama ever comes around these parts,
We'll tie him up and drag him behind the bus.

Who's this "Obama" guy? Is this something I'd need a TV to understand? My hole-in-the-ground gets lousy reception, see, and...

Christ, what an asshole. I tried reading that quote out loud with the sneer I would imagine it was delivered with, and now I have to go to the doctor because I sprained my face.

You know what stroy I haven't seen on the front of any newspapers?

Obama supporters increasingly dickish.
Despite a historic win and a President Elect who has made significant speeches about a united America, Obama supporters continue to be increasingly dickish.

"Well, despite our liberal belief systems, we just want to continually rub our opponents noses into the dirt." said one very dickish individual. "We're going to spend the next year picking increasingly unimportant issues and whining dickishly about them. We didn't get the chance to sink the democratic boat during the election, so we're gonna do our best to mess things up from now on."

Despite the problems with the economy and the middle east, President Elect took time from his busy schedule to try and reason with his Dickish supporters.

"They just won't listen." He said. "They're complete dicks."

I agree this is a pretty stupid post.

"They just won't listen." He said. "They're complete dicks."

Well, every candidate has some supporters who are dicks. Just look at what happened with the FISA vote. Some Obama supporters who had been ranting and raving about the bush administration suddenly started attacking Glenn Greenwald and FISA opponents in general and all sorts of nonsense.

The saddest part about the whole election is that it's over. Man, I'm going to miss a zillion wacky posts, a bazillion snarky comments, and the whole bonkers environment that was Metafilter 2008.

Good times.

This is a meh post. The first link discusses a local paper that didn't report on national news because they don't cover national news. The second is apparently a video link with no transcript.

But hey, it mentions the word "Obama" somewhere, so it has to be on MetaObama (no filter).

Obama supporters continue to be increasingly dickish.

As opposed to, say, Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh, who are being paragons of magananimity?

One of the usual consequences of winning -- er, beating the pants off your opponent -- is that you get to enjoy it. Especially when the opposition you bested has spent the last 8 years being as "dickish" as any political faction in American history.

Y'all haven't begun to see payback yet. Obama may talk reconciliation, but many of us know that the best hope for the United States involves a complete humiliation and crushing of the GOP. Or what's left of it.

(But I agree this is a meh post. Who the fuck cares what some shitty little rag in Oklahoma publishes or not? Like most print newspapers, they will be gone by the time Obama is re-elected. )

It took three elections before the United States picked a guy because he was smarter than the other guy. Sorry for being a dick about that.

That's assuming Mac users like Safari. Some of us still prefer Firefox.

Apple fails to report this as news, though. I ought to be outraged.

This is a terrible post.

Watching the video and RTFA, one doesn't come across an attitude of "NOBAMA AMIRITE LULZ!!!1". Moreso, and especially in the Oklahoma piece, the publisher of the paper states that people don't turn to his periodical for national news - that they get their national news from the Internet or from television, etc; the local paper exists to perform the function of reporting local news. Sounds like the publisher has his niche figured out.

Nice try and all with the exasperated posting, however. Tempest? Meet teapot.

yeah, jivadravya, but the same paper covered the fact that McCain was (!) campaigning on election day. Funny, that.
posted by notsnot at 5:27 AM on November 11, 2008

I still think that extrapolating a McCain campaigning piece into some sort of institutionalized racism (as the tags of this post seem to posit) is just going a little overboard.

For Christ's sake - Obama WON! Do we now have to spend the next four years pointing out every case of OMG THIS MSM OUTLET DON'T THINK OBAMA IZ CHRIST! BURN!!!!1

It's just a little ridiculous. The good guys won. If there are some McCain dead-enders in Oklahoma or wherever? So what? Reach out instead of trying to villify.

Do local papers more commonly report or not report national news that is likely to be covered everywhere else? One would think the demand for local papers would exist because of their coverage of local events: who the hell wants to read the Bumfuck Times when every national paper has far more resources to present interesting angles / comprehensive reporting on stories of national interest?

If these tiny little dailies were to have run an Obama wins story, it would have been over nothing but wire copy, and would have been so much less than the information that was being reported in all the big dailies (and these towns would likely have pretty good service from a nearby major daily) and much less than was being reported on TV. If they had devoted resources to covering Obama's win, would you have been happier with 'Obama wins. Local Residents Kind of Irked Because They Voted for the Other Guy?'

I think it's great that some local papers recognized that local elections really do matter, and have as much of a quality of life impact on the local population as national ones, and reported those instead of reprinting an AP story that everyone with an interest in the subject has already seen.

posted by The Straightener at 5:59 AM on November 11, 2008

Jacquilynne's quite right. Tiny local papers usually don't cover national news. They can't do it properly, so they're better off sticking to local stories. They might have covered election night events in their own area, but maybe in such a red state the election night events just involved everyone sitting at home and pouting anyway.

Yeah--I've legally changed my middle name to Hussein, per orders, and I drink Obama-flavored Kool-Aid all day long, and I have to say, there's probably nothing to this. I have some familiarity with tiny Texas newspapers. They'll run some national story if they have to fill some space, but most of the time it's all local, all the time. On an election day, they'll tell you all about the county and local races, especially because they might be the only place to get that info in any detail. They figure you know Obama won.

Besides, the folks who want a keepsake only have to go to their local convenience store, which I guarantee stocks the nearest big-city paper. Maybe they're upset because they didn't get there before the Metropolitan News was all gone, and they hoped the Happy Valley Journal would be their keepsake. Sorry! You'll have to scour the web and see if someone, somewhere, has made an appropriate memento for this election.

Respectfully
