Prairie Dogs of Capitol Hill

The Inauguration brought some strange creatures to the Hill.
My friend Spencer had a ticket to the Inauguration. He took these photos from the Blue section which was on the Capitol grounds with a direct view of the ceremony -- virtually a front row seat. On the ground was a lot of fresh mulch. As everyone waited for the ceremony to begin, people began gathering the mulch into piles to stand on for a better view. He said that people soon became territorial of their mounds! Others went so far as to horde mulch into plastic bags wherever they could find it. People were asking their "neighbors" to watch their mounds while they went to the bathroom. He overheard one conversation where a lady asked if she could stand on an empty mulch mound. The "neighbor" replied: "You can stand on it for now, but when that guy comes back... I don't know."

You aren't really supposed to link to things you or your friends have done. Also, I personally think this post is sort of weak. Inaugural mulch piles are just not that interesting.

One thing worth noting though... the temperature was in the twenties for much of the day, and the paper had advised people specifically to bring things to stand on top of, in order to keep warmer.
A nice thick pile of mulch would be a lot warmer than standing on the bare ground.

However curious this may be, linking to something a friend of yours has done is not an appropriate MetaFilter post. Also, outside of the "more inside", the links on the front page lack any sort of context, leaving me wondering what the heck I was supposed to be looking for in them..
