Evolution rejected by 50% of Brits surveyed

"Half of British adults do not believe in evolution, with at least 22% preferring the theories of creationism or intelligent design to explain how the world came about, according to a survey. Oh dear. Maybe the BBC's forthcoming Darwin season, complete with national treasure David Attenborough talking about Darwin and the Tree of Life will help.

James Williams, a lecturer at Sussex University, said: "Creationists ask if people believe in evolution. Evolution is a theory and a fact."

Uh...you know, I'm on Williams's side here and everything, but...this is maybe not the most articulate defense of evolutionary theory. Mister lecturer.

Yeah, but half of British adults do accept evolution as fact, and only about a quarter positively reject it. I wonder what the figures are like for other countries?

Anecdotally, despite a semi-Catholic education, I've never personally heard anybody defending creationism/intelligent design who wasn't clearly cakey.
