Danielle Ate The Sandwich plays the ukelele and sings.

Probably too cutesy for many, but I was smitten.

I totally just spelled ukulele wrong. I'm so, so sorry.

Oh geez, I've been smitten for months. Bought the CDs and everything. She's fantastic.

...I don't know where this -adorable-girl-with-ukulele trend came from, but it should be encouraged.

Lovely voice. Wish she'd cut the jokes and side-talk from her songs though and trust her own talent. Her covers are nice.

Not bad but my Ukulele love is Kate Micucci.

Also, is it me or does "I get ideas" sound weirdly auto-tuned in places? I've been crammed in a dark recording studio for the last couple weeks so I may be prone to hearing production work were there is none, but I swear I hear some forced fourths in there.
For the record, I'm kind of against "cute girl doing thing" youtube videos on general principle - mostly because of the side-lisping nerd-lust it seems to provoke but also because it's kind of lame to begin with, in an MPDG kind of way. i.e. damn hipsters and their damn ukeleles. I also seem to remember that a few years ago it was "cute chicks with banjos" but that fad died out something quick because, well, banjos are really kind of hard to play vs. the uke. I've yet to visit a co-op where there aren't at least three banjos resting forlorn in some dusty corner.

Cute!
I just wish Boing Boing hadn't driven this meme into the ground.

If we're going to have entertainment genres, I much prefer "cute girls doing things" to some of the other categories that have arisen in our time, such as "angry African American men shouting to the accompaniment of electronically generated clicking noises," or "middle-aged white men growling like Satan while playing the guitar real fast," or "genetic freaks dribbling basketballs," or "various forms of simulated mutilation and dismemberment projected onto large screens," or "chefs swearing at people in restaurant kitchens," or "women shaking their asses at preternatural speed as if to invite anal intercourse from a race of alien egg beaters," or "people thinking of things to argue about on 'newslike' stage sets," or "NASCAR", or "All-news networks," or "presidential press conferences," or "white men in suits pretending they have the slightest idea of what is going on in the economy." Yeah, I'll take "cute girls doing things" any day.

She's good, but she's definitely no molly lewis.
Covers: Toxic, I Believe She's Lying, BACH, Still Alive, Chop Suey
Originals: MyHope, Road Trip (about the astronaut), It all makes sense in the end.

"She's good, but she's no x" is kind of douchey. Music isn't a contest, except when it is. "You'd really like x too" or "y reminds me of x, who rules" is a constructive way of redirecting attention without putting someone down. There's room in our hearts for multiple ukegrrls.

(steps down from soapbox, picks up ukelele, weeps into beard while cursing nature)

How about "ordinary middle-aged guy playing ukulele" videos? I have a webcam...

I was wondering the same thing. (Well, the same thing in less-technical terms, I guess — I know fuck-all about recording. Whassa forced fourth?)

Then again, I can't listen to Sinead O'Connor anymore without thinking "auto-tune" either. I think all the fake-melismatic singing on the radio has just ruined my ears for the real thing.

Hrm. Didn't mean for that to sound like nitpicking criticism — just idle music-nerdiness. She's got a damn fine voice and good taste in tunes, and if there's room in the world for fifteen bajillion kids with guitars then I think I can accommodate one more with a ukulele. Great post.

Also, ukulele always looks to me like it oughta be pronounced yoo-kyoo-lay-le. Like noo-kyoo-lar.

Is this ukulele week on Metafilter?

How about an old guy playing ukulele?

When my kid is antsy or upset, Danielle Ate the Sandwich calms hime down.
He loves her.
But then he loves his own ukulele.
I don't mind it at all.

And how can there be a "best of UkeTube" thread without mention of Julia Nunes?

Queen- "You're My Best Friend"

Molly Lewis is better on the uke but Danielle really does have a much better voice (both are terrific). Thanks for this!

My favorite ukelele youtube video: Dead Flowers

That is pretty great. Unfortunately, he isn't all that cute and is clearly over 21, so no internet fame for him!

Absolutely. It really jumps out at me on the phrase 10 seconds in.
