Some people take a campy TV show much too seriously.

I'll leave this up, simply because I hate Bobby Flay too.

I know the stupid Food Network decided on the outcome before the competition began (the worlds of cooking and pro wrestling are starting to blur). There are very few chefs that can match the skills of the Iron Chefs, and Bobby Flay sure ain't one of them.

Now, if it were Ming Tsai, maybe it'd be a real competition.

I think the real question is, how long before Tommy Mothershead comes to NYC to exact some Iron Chef Justice on behalf of his mentor? Did you see his eyes when he talked about Morimoto-san's knifework? That boy is a serial killer waiting to happen.

I don't see how anyone can say it was "fixed" if you didn't taste the food and you didn't hear everyone's comments. Remember, they had to edit down over 2 hours of commenting into ~10 minutes of footage. Remember just yesterday, one of the judges commented to Chen that one of his dishes was the worst he's ever made, yet he ended up winning. Was that fixed also?

That boy is a serial killer waiting to happen.

Kinda reminded me of the (similarly creepy) kid in The Shining. Red Rum sauce with that, Mr. Flay?

I've yet to see an episode of Iron Chef, as I can't ever watch past the opening bit where he takes a bite out of an apple or something, and gives the camera an extended grimace\ glare\ smirk.

I image he'd give the exact same look if he'd just bitten into a human head.

(shudder)

Damn. I am watching the end of the show right now. Bobby Flay is a disgrace. I know, I know, it is somewhat of a wrestling entertainment type of show, but the arrogance of Flay sets me on edge. I was hoping that Miho Kanno would get up and put Flay in a suplex while Tommy came crashing down off the top ropes. Oh well...

Aww, I had missed the first airing of the big Iron Chef rematch last weekend, and settled in to watch it this afternoon at 4pm ET (as I'm not yet converted to the Church of TiVo). What are the chances that I'd innocently stumble on a MeFi thread that gives away the ending with only 10 minutes to go in the show? But it only makes me more angry about that pretender Bobby Flay. I don't know which is worse -- Flay beating Morimoto, or William Shatner trying to take Chairman Kaga's place in an American version of the show.

P.S. he takes a bite out of an apple or something
It's a yellow bell pepper. And it's definitely quite a grimace\glare\smirk... just one of the many inexplicably campy elements of this show that make it hard not to watch past the opening.

[Now, if it were Ming Tsai, maybe it'd be a real competition.]

I think Tsai would destroy Flay, Morimoto would be a battle for the ages. Actually in his food network chat Flay said he would like to face Wolfgang Puck, that would be a disaster for Flay.

[Self-linking, are we? Tsk, tsk]

Yes, and I hoped that it would be acceptable in this context. We called for the Jihad within 30 minutes of the original show's airing. Didn't mean to offend, just wanted to point out the start.

Trust me, Tsai would get destroyed by Morimoto. Part of the competition is having confidence (arrogance to some), and seeing how Tsai was kissing Morimoto's ass on his show, he simply wouldn't stand a chance. Not to mention that his food doesn't look all that impressive. I've made several of Flay's dishes from his show and they were all excellent.

I thought Kaga (don't remember the actor's name, sorry) made that face because he doesn't really like the peppers. Sorta like how Mel Blanc always had to spit out the carrots when voicing Bugs Bunny...

Bobby Flay and Emeril get on my nerves. Flay is just a jerk who grills things; and Emeril's lack of personality makes his attempts at enthusiasm excruciating to watch. Meanwhile, I really like Alton Brown, for his benign personality, and genuinely entertaining and informative show.

Oh, and I don't like Jamie Oliver either.

And those of you dissing Iron Chef, any of the Iron Chefs, or that yellow pepper had best be ashamed of yourself. That show is brilliant: my wife and I saw it on the International channel when we were still living in Los Angeles and there was no English translation. Compelling television.

The Food Network relies on Emeril WAAAAAY to much. And as much as I like Sara Moulton for her down-to-earthness, I'm afraid she's on there a little too much as well. 3 times a day? Plus reruns?

I wholeheartedly agree with Artlung - Alton Brown truly is king. And those who do get tired of the Food Network, I suggest a trip to PBS to watch America's Test Kitchen. They're like the Consumer Reports of the cooking world not only testing out various equipment from mixers to pots & pans but also test out various methods for prepping and cooking certain dishes.

Maybe it's better if you don't understand what they're saying, but I've never been able to sit through a whole episode of the dubbed version.

Is it true that William Shatner will be hosting the American version?

You like Sara Moulton? Shame! She can't ever sit still without interupting people in a passive-agressive "oh yes of course I know how to make remoulade of red peppers" kind of way. For me she's the worst person in the whole Food Network.

That milquetoast Ming “Mint” Tsai would get his arse creamed by butch number Masaharu Morimoto. I can barely put up with Mint’s vocal style. Of all the cooking shows, it must be conceded that Martha has the greatest confidence, saying only what is necessary, resisting the tendency toward breathiness or hackneyed prosody, and daring to be silent for moments at a time while she mixes on her big KitchenAid or garrots an off-camera stagehand.

Kaga makes the face when he bites the bell pepper because somebody is below him, tickling his butt.

You'd make that face, too, if someone was tickling your butt onstage.

flay must be sleeping with some exec at the food network. he's from brooklyn and he's on tv trying to teach us about *southwest cuisine*! he's a charlatan of the highest order, a yuppie and an unoriginal. the food network needs to get themselves together and get some personalities that mirror the respect and originality of the alimighty iron chefs. please!
posted by alfredogarcia at 9:54 AM on June 10, 2001

You can probably rest assured that the Flay win was negotiated by Food Network when they were acquiring the rights to the 52 newest episodes from Fuji.

Flay is a chump and Food Network probably thought it would boost his ratings in the US if he beat Morimoto. It seems to have backfired...

Much like a certain other tv cooking personality from Fall River, MA teaching us about Cajun cuisine?
