There is no cure for depression. What exactly is depression? Disease or enlightenment? How prevalent is it?
Diagnose
Treat
???
Profit!!

The third source listed on the wiki entry cites air fresheners as a possible contributor. A BBC report says placebos work as antidepressants. Maybe people are depressed for a good reason. Maybe they're right, and all anyone can do is distract depressed people with shiny objects. Bad web design is depressing, but maybe it can distract you instead of making you jump off a chair. Meanwhile, profit, profit, profit!

This post was deleted for the following reason: I know you put some time into this, but as a post it's kind of a wandering mess. -- cortex

*disclaimer: suicide is weak and mean - I am in no way advocating depression as an excuse for anything, merely saying that it might be a normal condition.
It all started with a commercial we saw, when I said, "You know that's brilliant"
"What"
"The drugs for depression. They can never fix it, or tell you you're wrong."
"Huh?"
"Well you're not wrong; you will still die. They can't fix it, so they'll never run out of buyers."

You seem to to be confused about the difference between existential depression (the Buddhism article) and clinical depression (the drug-related links).

This FPP is seriously weak but especially obnoxious is the conspiracy angle.

Perhaps Robert Sapolsky (a Stanford neurobiologist who has also struggled with clinical depression) can raise your consciousness a bit?

Lede is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders?

It's not a mess; it's just riddled with links. Okay I'm gonna exit this post now.

I agree with Burhanistan, why add to the confusion surrounding what depression is?
It's not a farcical notion, depression.
