Basic models of flocking behavior are controlled by three simple rules:
  • Separation - avoid crowding neighbors (short range repulsion)
  • Alignment - steer towards average heading of neighbors
  • Cohesion - steer towards average position of neighbors (long range attraction)
With these three simple rules, the flock moves in an extremely realistic way, creating complex motion and interaction that would be extremely hard to create otherwise. posted by kipmanley (8 comments total)

It's funny you brought this up. I was thinking about it last night headed down the highway in Houston when all the Superbowl parties were breaking up.
  • Separation - at least half of drivers are below-average in skill, especially after drinking (and hooo boy do they drink and drive here)
  • Alignment - don't tease the concrete barriers. when the exit or overpass says 40mph, it's usually advisable
  • Cohesion - don't be the lone wolf doing 80 that gets pulled over for it, when everyone else does 80 together and doesn't get pulled over

After your OK Go post which had a similar mystery meat feel to it, I suspect that your thing is getting people to click on the links to music videos you would like them to see. That makes me think you work for a public relations company that is trying to get exposure for their clients.

More to the point, there is no flocking behavior in the damn video, so this POST IS A LIE.

This would be an awesome post, if it weren't completely stupid.

i'm jumping on the "was expecting to see flocking in the music video link" bandwagon.

I was hoping for a computer simulation. I got a lot of meh.

I assumed you made a mistake, until I read the title of your post.

yeah - major lack of flocking in that video, which has some nice elements to it.

My favorite part was the flocking behavior.

    This is one of:
    1. Too meta even for metafilter
    2. Pepsi blue!
    3. Copy-pasta with the wrong link.
    Flag it and move on.
