"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada." - Sarah Palin in a recent speech in Alberta, CA. This is not the first time she's made some interesting remarks re: Canada's healthcare system.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sarah Palin opens mouth. This is pretty thin for a post without something a lot more substantial going on. -- cortex

On the plus side at least this is further evidence that she completely fails at controlling her message and would never be able to run a successful presidential campaign.

PALIN: We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn’t that ironic?

I think the word you're looking for here Sarah is hypocritical.

To be fair, at the time, she thought Canada was the 51st state in the union.

Given all the cashing-in she's been doing, I found her use of the word "hustle" more revealing than she may have intended.

Sarah Palin's right: we need to get rid of all of these damn socialists. We should start with Sarah Palin.

She admitted she didn't know a lot about Ms. Palin's politics, but she said she loves her nonetheless.

This seems to be a theme.

This show was pretty good when it started but the writers have just gotten lazy. It's simply not believable any more, even as satire.

You think that's ironic? Does anyone remember this: Nelson went on to refer to himself as "a fiscally responsible grandfather" and said he's being roped into paying for government programs he doesn't believe in. "I've been on welfare and food stamps...did anyone help me?" Nelson said, perhaps not realizing that welfare and food stamps are actually forms of government aid.

I cannot find a text of the speech online. I notice that a number of news reports about the speech mention her flaunting her Canadian ancestry in the speech: about half of the reports I have read say that she said two of her great-grandfathers were Canadian and half mention without comment that she said both of her great-grandfathers were from Canada. If the latter comment is accurate, then either she does not know what the word "both" means, she cannot count as high as four, or her parents were siblings. Much is thereby explained.

You are fucking kidding me. I might have voted for her if it wasn't brought to my attention today that she was morally, rhetorically and politically bankrupt.

Ah, yes. Calgary.

We've got a new (provincial) health minister, and he doesn't seem to be too 'in tune' with the less gov. message. It appears to be 'throw money at the problem' time.

I wish they'd pend the moneys intelligently, rather than just spend it. This is more the fault of Capital Health than anything else though, who try to get it spent before the cash is pulled back.

like so many other people i know, she only thinks about what's good for her - and in a separate mental box, thinks about what's good public policy - if the two conflict, her wants will come first over her political philosophy

i'm not sure that makes her a hypocrite though, as a hypocrite would actually have to put the two ideas together and consider how they conflict

that makes some people so uncomfortable they back away from even considering it

This is right up there with Limbaugh being on welfare, then being addicted to drugs. And just like Limbaugh this will affect nothing for the people that follow her.

It is truly bizarre that Republicans bleat about personal responsibility in poor people, but seem to slide that standard on by when it comes to the demagogues that they love. Maybe it's all tied up in christian redemption theology or something, I don't know.

But it makes my knuckles itch because it's the kind of thing that can let events like Roy Ashburn being arrested for driving drunk on the way home from a gay bar slide right through the gay marriage debate.

Not to mention a $1.2 Billion South Hospital that won't have enough nurses or doctors to staff the first floor.

So socialized medicine is ok when it benefits her and her family huh? I guess such hypocrisy shouldn't seem that odd from someone who denounces Hollywood in one breath and cleans out the gift bags at the Oscar parties the next.

Yeah that gift bag story is a wicked pisser. I hope they (Palin & co.) realize they are required to pay federal income tax on those items.

Nor to mention the new Mazankowski heart center, which is currently in use as a warehouse, because many of the elevators are not large enough to admit stretchers.

It's more fun to mutter dire imprecations.

This is in perfect accordance with the only two principles that Sarah Palin has ever gone by, as far as I can tell:

1) She tells people what she thinks they want to hear. She's speaking to Canadians, she talks up Canada. Yeah, maybe she said something different on her Facebook or whatever, but they're the ones who are paying her a minimum of $100K to speak tonight. Accuse whomever might point out a possible discrepancy of playing "gotcha" journalism and move on.

2) Maximum perks for minimum work. She would have been perfectly happy with government health care if, heaven help us, she'd won the Vice-Presidency. She didn't hesitate to get her grandson covered by the Indian Health Service on the basis of her husband's single native great-grandmother.

One more plank in my boardwalk of proof that people who oppose "Canada style" evil communo-fascistic-socialism marxism-ist(ism)... just don't know yet that they deep down actually support it intrinsically..
And are just following some incredibally ridiculous ironic and outdated party line, rather than thinking about how 'they' should behave as members of a community, in a civil society.
Canada has five rules for health club..
1Public administration
2Comprehensiveness
3Universality
4Portability
5Accessibility.
(oh, and 'don't tell the yanks about how awesome health-club is...,' That's number six.)
Ensured and managed by this mechanism.
transfer payments, from Federal-->state (province) already happen in the USA, why not jump them into action for a good cause like caring for the weakest and least cared for amongst us.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada." - Sarah Palin

When I read this in the Globe and Mail yesterday, I couldn't quite figure out how she could say this, and then in the next breath denigrate healthcare reform, and I'm glad someone else was able to pick up on this.

She's so pro-Canada that she's using a famous Canadian's definition of the word "ironic."

Heh, I thought the same thing, but then thought that perhaps I had drunk too much red wine and had a hangover, causing me to lose the ability to understand printed words and just want the Palin G/M story was all about.

Bizarre.
