Is matching literary tastes a reliable way to find potential romantic partners?

Books are rarely dealbreakers, but they are indeed signs of intellectual curiosity and tools for empathy. And in the competitive world of modern dating, and the smaller, more circumscribed world of literarily engaged and somewhat snobbish readers, deploying the names of the proper authors is essential.

He disparages Vonnegut as being for kids. Poop on him.

There was a very, very bleak time in my life (let's call this college) when I, too, dismissed Vonnegut as being good for high school kids. I blame this partly on feeling superior for reading folks like Durkheim and Foucault and partly on my asshole of a boyfriend-at-the-time who didn't like Vonnegut for personal reasons.

And then I grew up and read Mother Night and Player Piano and Bagombo Snuff Box and really, fuck everyone who disparages Vonnegut.

I love Vonnegut, I love all sorts of writers. The real question for me is musical tastes. Music I dislike can ruin a romantic moment, the wrong music can wake me put of a sound sleep.

Yah, but I don't want to hang out with those people.

Cannot be serious. "We were introduced by some mutual friends, went out a few times and really hit it off. Then we went back to his/her place and I saw a well-thumbed copy of The Foutainhead..."

Oh, you read the Economist? It'll never work between us.
