It's-a me...

Two brothers pull off the heist of the century when they steal money from a criminal kingpin. The kingpin retaliates by abducting one brother's girlfriend. Now the brothers and their two close allies must team up and rescue her, deal out some pain, and get away with their lives. You may think this sounds vaguely familiar, but you've never seen Nintendo's classic Super Mario Bros. depicted like this. Presenting The Brothers Mario [SLYT; contains strong language and scenes of violence; rated M-for-Mature].

I'd probably actually watch this movie, which probably says more about me than anything else.

Well it certainly beats Super Mario Brothers, that's for sure.

Wait, what did Mario steal from Bowser before Bowser kidnapped the princess?

They totally need to make that into a real game.

That was great. I like Mario whistling the them at the end, nice touch.

Yeah, this is excellent. At first I thought "Oh, it's like The Boondock Saints were Italian and stole Michael Bay's budget...And look, a female character.". But it's far better than that.

Honestly, this doesn't look substantially better than or different from the terrible live action movie. I mean some different choices have been made, but it's all the same "what if the Mario Bros had to contend with the real world" shorthand with a different kind of cliched and lazy humour.

The nod to the Zelda cartoons was great. Oh, I see it's the first YouTube comment. I'll be on my way, then.

Because what the Mario games have been missing is that we have too many games of bizarre whimsy and not enough where you shoot motherfuckers.

Have you seen There Will Be Brawl? It's a noir take on Mario and Luigi done by some California students. A kid who randomly friended me on lj wrote some for it.

I liked it, but I think I'm becoming a little saddened that the new creative is simply using other people's ideas and readily available software to, well, mix with another idea. I'd just like to see something a little, well, original once in a while.

Not that I didn't kind of like it, and think that Rockstar should have a chat with Nintendo to see what could be done. Then again, I'm pretty sure (it wasn't credited) that the song they were using seemed to be by John Cena, which is worrisome in its own right.

I was never a Nintendo kid or a Mario Brothers fan but that was six kinds of awesome at least.

Two points.

One that movie is kinda amazing cause every single character is acting like their in a completely different movie. You don't see messes like that often, so it's fascinating.

It contains one of the finest SOON THE UNIVERSE WILL BE MINE! line readings ever.

Have you been on the internet lately?

More to the point, have you read any history of literature? Shakespeare steals his plots from Holinshead, Virgil is nothing more than Homer Fan-fiction. And seriously, what is up with artists using perspective rather than developing their own techniques?

Wait, what did Mario steal from Bowser before Bowser kidnapped the princess?

Well it all started in Bowser's personal menagerie. His girl Pauline was enjoying an afternoon at the gorilla exhibit when Mario busted in with a hammer and stole her away. A kidnapping for a kidnapping... Bowser's just getting even.

I'm kind of tired of the fake movie trailers lately. At first they were kind of funny, but now they're rather old and predictable. This was funny for about 20 seconds...

Nonsense. I think we can all agree that Dennis Hopper's definitive portrayal has set the bar to which all other actors playing King Koopa aspire.

Apparently one of the reasons why the action SMB movie is so ....special is that the director wanted to do some gritty sci-fi thing and the studio really wanted a lighthearted kid's movie and both refused to relent so the result is the complete clashing of tones.

Movie trailers are an art unto themselves, and are often better than the movie they're designed to promote. I like these "fake" movie trailers a lot, because they manage to convey exactly all that's necessary without the need for a crappy movie behind the trailer.

I figured it would be a mistake to mention my lack of enthusiasm for covers, mashups, reimaginings, and so on. Yes, it's been going on for a long time, no, I'm not blind to the internet and its trends. Just a bit tired of it. There's some great stuff out there, original ideas, people creating their own characters and storylines. It's just that it's overwhelmed by people using other people's ideas, other people's characters, and so on. I laughed, okay. I thought it was funny. It's just that there's not a single original idea in the whole thing. Not this, not the Yogi Bear thing, not half the shit that makes the rounds these days. All I'm saying is I'd love to see creative people being creative again, rather than relying on established characters to get their name out.
