Nobody follows through on their hoaxes anymore. I'm kind of disappointed. I didn't think that this would turn out to be anything big, but I was really hoping that it would be something ridiculous. Sigh.
i didn't know anything about this, so this letter thing just confused the hell out of me. sigh.

perplexed, that proves nothing. Based on the information in that post, the sites DON'T have the same host.

And why hasn't anyone come up with the theory that the GOVERNMENT finally caught up with the guy and the current "Ok, I was just kidding" message isn't a coverup?
Hmm?
HMM?

Well, I think that the ghost of Andy Warhol finally worked through his backlog and caught up with the guy to tell him his 15 minutes were up...

Who thinks the 8th march 2003 guy and the http://www.cutoffmyfeet.com guy are the same person? Me neither, but it's a good theory. squidman is correct, you only get 15 minutes, but it might take a while for the ghost of Andy Warhol to catch up...

Probably the best remains of the site I can find are at: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/784949/posts.
The "earthshattering" pictures are missing though.

So, in summary, that letter seems to be saying:
"We started this page as a ficticious hoax to generate publicity for a future project. It started to work, so we took it down. Please be excited about the future project anyway."
I think we can rule out any professional movie studios or publishers at this point. Anyone who truly wanted publicity would be loving all of the attention...

why didn't they try to sell the site to someone who did want the publicity? surely there must be some film or book coming out round then that would have been able to use it?
