This guy thinks the XBox will kill off PC gaming. He also thinks the XBox is "one of the most important events in gaming in the next decade". Whew!

I think this guy has lost the plot. The more i read the more it looked like a glorified pc. I did not know it is going to run Windows 2000, now i know there is no way i'm going to consider it.

I agree, the Xbox looks great, but I don't think that we should jump to any conclusions. The thing isn't even out yet!

The guy claims the XBox has everything PC gaming has. What about user-created mods? What about pirated shit? What about a simple mouse?! Is this thing hardware-upgradable?

So it mentions the ability to dl maps created by other users, which sounds pretty limited. And if it's actually not that limited, it sort of opens the window for viruses and cracking.

Consoles can NEVER be as versitile as PC's. Not to mention the difference in depth involved with PC games vs console games.

And when they compare prices, they are taking a PC monitor into account and they aren't taking a TV set or HDTV into account, so all price comparisons are invalid.

I have no doubt that the XBox could easily be the best console ever created but nothing can ever fully match PC gaming.

Console gaming is better than PC gaming-- my tandy runs windows2000 now and the games still suck.

Look, console gaming and PC gaming are different things, ofcourse they are coming close and closer together. And, right now, the PC is closer to taking over the console arena. There is no way in hell any console will be able to replace the pc, even in gaming, the same jerks touted this for Playstation 2, where they said 20 years off we'd have the play station instead of the PC. Yeah, right.

I think this guy's argument is pointless. "PC Killer" consoles have been talked about for far too long. The PC will remain a viable gaming machine for many, many reasons.

What's even the point of arguing that a console's going to kill the PC gaming experience? Especially for someone who makes money writing about video games.

Regarding the mod scene, grank, he does address that in the article. It's actually of of of the things that indicate to me exactly how far off base he is. He talks about how the PC is going to be required for people to create their mods.

CrayDrygu, I haven't played Quake without a keyboard, but I have Played UT for the PS2, and the controls are okay. I do still prefer my keyboard and mouse, but the N64 Controller (yes, I still have my hard on for it :-) and the controller mapping for GoldenEye and Perfect Dark are phenominal, and would work for many a FPS.

For what it's worth, I absolutley HATE the N64 controller. I'll take the PS controller any day. What the world really needs is some sort of modular controller that can be adapted to an individual's preferences--not just a "programmable" controller where you assign the buttons, but something truly customizable.

I haven't played Descent, so I'll happily take your word on it, and I prefer Z for shooting in GoldenEye & Perfect Dark, but that's probably personal bias.

And cycling for weapons is a pain in the ass, good point.

I definitely agree with you that PCs and consoles are both good, and both going to exist.

I'm not sure what makes me love the N64 gamepad so, to be honest, it just fits my hands perfectly, and the N64 games work so well with it, I want to use it everywhere. I've played N64 for over 24 hours straight (well, bathroom and food breaks :-) at times, with no crampage.

jpolous: I wish some no-name company would start making controllers for all platforms that are shaped like PSX controllers, and N64 controllers, and Dreamcast controllers. What would completely rock (though I've no idea how feasible) would be a dongle to adapt to and from all platforms.

Here's a guy who thinks the other dude is full of it.

Actually, I think they're both off base.

I sorry Steven, but I don't see the connection. The link you posted leads to a clarification about a rant regarding needing a computer to get a cable modem. Am I missing something?

What he's saying is that the XBox won't do all the things the other guys says because it's fundamentally crippled; and that the hard disk has the effect of partially eliminating the one big advantage consoles have: consistent execution environments. I think those are valid points.

Competitive analysis: XBox versus Sex.

Sex controllers break into two separate groups:
Male: One button -- overly simplistic control
Female: Many buttons -- no existing manual

okay, that's really weird, the first time I followed that link it went somewhere else. I clicked again just now, and it works fine.

Curious. Or hallucination. Preferably the first.
