Looking for wonderful books I can read to my kids, one chapter at a time
My kids (a boy and a girl) are now five years old, and my wife or I read to them every night before bed. I'd like to start reading larger books to them which we can stretch out throughout a week or more, by reading them a chapter a night. Please help me put together a great reading list of age-appropriate books that will capture their imaginations and inspire happy dreams.

My pet Sound question
Despite taking several physics classes many years ago I don't think I understand how sound works. I was watching the excellent Behind the Sounds video about creating "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and thinking about how all those instruments at different registers ultimately are just recorded as one wave (in mono) or at most two (in stereo) that hit the ear. How can one wave carry such a density of information (like the Beach Boys) yet only carry information based on frequency, wave length and intensity? How can I tell that there are all these instruments when I only hear one wave?
"Freedom is a good thing"
Sam and Bethany Torode published a book in 2002 called Open Embrace: A Protestant Couple Rethinks Conception, a book that captured the growing movement among conservative Protestant Christians toward the use of natural family planning. In 2006, the Torodes' announced their perspective had changed slightly (Archive.org capture of full statement). In 2009, the Torodes divorced. Bethany is now writing candidly about her life as a single mother with 4 children on her blog, In Full Bloom. Sam recently published a novel called The Dirty Parts of the Bible.

It's Marrow That I Love
Amit Gupta needs a bone marrow transplant, and to increase chances of finding a match, Seth Godin offered a $10k bounty to whoever donated to his friend. There was only one problem. The offer was illegal. The National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 made it "felony punishable by up to five years in prison" to offer financial incentive for bone marrow donation. The Institute for Justice has sued the US Attorney General to overturn this restriction (commentary).

Two baking questions
1) All of my chocolate cookie recipes yield cookies that are gooey and soft and wonderful just out of the oven, but not as wonderful once they (inevitably) cool and become crusty and hard. What's the key to keeping cookies soft and moist? 2) A recipe calls for self-raising flour but all I have is all-purpose flour. Is there a way to turn the latter into the former, or do I need to make a run to the store?

Find This Article on Gender Differences and Free Time
I'm trying to find an article from the past year or two that discussed a general difference in how men and women spend their free time. The article posited that women are more likely to pick up activities that require work/responsibility (volunteering, etc), and men are more likely to pursue activities that are more fun-based (sports, etc).

Rebus Help Needed. For the sake of my mental health.
Please help me solve this rebus. It's been tickling my brain for weeks, and it's been keeping me up at night.
I asked the puzzle-creator for clues and he wouldn't budge. Until I asked, and guessed repeatedly, over the course of many days and finally was able to extract the following info:
Pic #1 is meant to depict Mikhail Gorbachev. But the word intended here is a cruel, immature nickname for the splotch on his forehead. It is an English word.
Pic #2 is most likely intended to be "eye."
Pic #3 is a synonym for "flies."
Pic #4 is probably not simply "pepper" but rather some word associated with pepper, like "sprinkle" or "season" or "shake."
The final answer here is a recognizable, three word phrase. In English.
Please help me if you can. And I thank you. Sincerely.
