Babs knew!

Babs knew! Look out Miss Cleo, here comes Miss (insert appropriate Barbara Streissand insult here).
Though stung by last year's Republican victory, Streisand has faith in the Democratic Party ''and its ideals to support working people over big business." Nice to see the elite rich are still concerned about the little people. I would rather watch Yasser Arrafat dressed as Dianah Ross/Michael Jackson square dance with Arnold Ziffle before listening to her cornpone singing...Well, I exaggerate to clarify.

Have you actually heard the record? It's very good. Barbra Streisand's quite a good singer, you know. The songs, the arrangements and the orchestrations aren't all that bad either.
Hey, if you were going to judge recording artists by their spiel you probably would never buy another record in your life.
Streisand- and people like U2 - actually do - and give - something against poverty, intolerance and stupidity. They have a right to spout nonsense or trippy-hippy stuff to go with their real contributions.

To comment on the obvious would be redundant...

Well, Mack Twain, be fair: you said you would rather watch Arafat dancing with a pig than listening to her sing. So it wasn't that obvious. Freudian note: would you have chosen two other performers if she wasn't Jewish?
Anyway, lightening up, Mack: I once saw her at the Odeon restaurant in Manhattan. Uma Thurman was there too, right in front of me. But I couldn't take my eyes off Streisand. She laid into a group of about seven managers and yes-men for two hours straight, bellowing and berating them non-stop. And she ate about double what they, with the benefit of silence, were able to.
It was quite frightening!
I just admire her completely, is my excuse. She's a great singer, a good little actress, a passable director, a wonderful live performer and she wears her heart on her sleeve. I'm embarrassed by her political statements - stay away from her website! - but I wish all showbiz people were as coherent and actually generous as she is.
E.g.: Has Alec Baldwin left the country yet, as he promised if Bush won? :)

As a non-believing, non-practicing Jew with a Christmas tree in his living room, I still find it strange that la Barbra -- the quintessential Jewish American Princess -- is doing a Christmas album...

That's nothing, The Moldy Peaches knew, as did Superchunk. In the Moldy Peaches song NYC's Like a Graveyard there are lines that go, "New York City's like a grave yard..." and, "All the yuppies getting married - all the yuppies getting buried..." I listened to the album about a week after the attacks and it freaked the hell out of me.
Oh yeah, the Superchunk song Out on the Wing (I think) has a line that goes, "Plane crash footage on TV *something, something* I know that could be me..." I listened to that about a week after the attack as well and it made me sad.

I just love Barbra. Talented, smart, sensitive, attractive and strong. What more could a man want? Hell, she even has her politics straight!

She relates, ''One day I tell myself, 'Screw everything, I'm getting a Carl's Jr. hamburger and eating fried chicken three nights in a row. I don't care about my weight.' The next day, my optimistic side takes over and I think, 'Wait a minute, life goes on, people will get wiser, justice will prevail. Maybe I should watch my diet.' I'm still in that state of confusion.''
A prophet speaks, and a tired nation thanks her. "I don't care about my weight." My god, the woman is a martyr, an American pieta. We care, Barbra! WE CARE!
I hope this doesn't scotch her deal over the duet with O*Town. This country can't take much more heartache. Thank you, Barbra. Thank you for having the courage to be so overreachingly self-obsessed in a time when the rest of us are chicken-heartedly thinking about other, non-Barbra-related things.
I admire you, Barbra. People who don't need people are the luckiest people. A wise woman said that once, and I never forgot it.

As Streisand groped for equilibrium after Sept. 11, her shock turned to uncertainty in matters both grave and trivial.
hey, Skot, you forgot the first sentence, which kinda puts her quote into context, don't you think? it's kind of like the way a lot of other people have felt since that day. you're trying to paint her as selfish and self important when, in fact, the paragraph demonstrates that in some ways, she's just like the rest of us.

I didn't forget the first sentence; I just thought its stupidity was equivalent to the much funnier hamburger sentence. If, in some ways, she's just like the rest of us, then why on earth would I want to hear about her fast-food predilections in the wake of a terrorist attack? On the other hand, if, in some ways, she's not at all like the rest of us--an egomaniacal kinda-talent who measures in micrometers the distance in which she is willing to stray from the middle road--then I have no problem mocking her ridiculous statements.

i get it. you don't like her and you're looking for more excuses to deride her.
what's the difference between her Carl's Jr. tale and all the stories of uncertainty, confusion, shock and fear of thousands of other people that have had published in papers and online?
oh, yes. she's Barbra Streisand, and that's all the difference you want.

Geez, Barbra, I'm surprised to see you knocking your own album like this. You're probably right, but still ...
