The Smithsonian takes a look at Paint by Number kits and asks for submissions of your own memories.

i preferred the paint books where you jsut needed a wet brush, and the 'paint' was already in the right spots, you just had to dissolve it.

did those have a name?

o2b: alternately Paint with Water or Watercolor books. I used to love those too although my strongest memory of them is disappointment in finding out that they don't color themselves in when you run them under the sink. (ah curiosity...)

This is a great show at the Smithsonian (come visit us). And the catalog is really nice too.

Are paint-by-number kits still available anywhere? KayBee and Toys backwards-R Us, don't seem to carry them, and I haven't managed to find them at any of those "educational" toy stores either. Little help? Is there a Montessori Mamma out there got my numba?

chino, I've seen paint-by-numbers kits at craft stores (Michael's specifically). Check around, because I'm pretty sure you can still find really cheesy kits on black velvet.
