Booby Trap

Booby Trap is a fabulous Flash video set to a Chemical Brothers song. I was blown away (altho I may be easily impressed). Another wonderful use for Flash is the Control Group's web site. Never heard of 'em? Try an MP3. Check out the video.

WOW! That is one of the coolest things I have seen on the web this year. I wonder how they rotoscoped the live action into Flash? Do you happen to know what CB song that was?

You guys should check out Banja. It's a really stylish Flash game by team Chaman. Really, the word "game" doesn't do justice to what Banja is. Check it out!

A warning on Banja ...
Don't bother unless you have a computer with at least 500 Mhz and a broadband connection.
But if you do... you _need_ to see it.

I wonder how they rotoscoped the live action into Flash?

There are several different ways to take live action, chop the framerate, and vectorize each frame. And they all end up looking cool ;)

Egomedia uses a similar effect on their site (warning: full screen, and plenty of orange.)

I believe that Adobe LiveMotion is useful for achieving this kind of effect.

a lot of video editing software will let you dump a clip out as individual frames in numbered sequence. flash 5 can convert bitmap to vector, but it's likely you'd have to mess about with contrast in some other application to get the effect seen on boobytrap.

If you are curious about the process, there is a tutorial done by The Chopping Block at the Adobe Studio(registration required). They use Streamline to do bulk bitmap->vector conversions.

Last I looked, Streamline hadn't been updated in years. Have they done anything with it? That and Freehand's autotrace were both pretty ineffective tools--at least, if you wanted fairly "realistic" results. But I haven't kept up with the b-to-v "space".

Flash has its own bitmap-to-vector tools built in nowadays. They work pretty well for solid-colored images (e.g. logos). If you posterized video captures in Photoshop before taking them into Flash, that'd probably do the trick.
