We wuz robbed. I know, it wasn't really a handball. USA loses to Germany and their amazing goalkeeper. Good run, guys.
The Germans hit the post twice, I was shocked. For a stretch right before the end of the first half, the U.S.A. was playing really poorly, what with those two yellow cards and everything.

The US had three real good chances to score and they were all flubbed. You can’t flub against a united Germany.
I watched World Cup ’98. This is one was so much better. Might even watch the rest of the games.

I thought the USA played very well - a good last 20 minutes. Sad to think that they reached the quarter finals of the biggest sporting event in the World and will go unrecognised in their home country - they deserve better.
As for Germany - there is no question they are due a real hiding from one of the remaining clubs. Can't wait.

The local AM news radio station mentioned its Single A baseball team in the sports update before it got to soccer. So, to answer your question, no, we can't go back, because most of us didn't care in the first place.

Yeah, Friedel was a monster out there. I'm tremendously proud of the team and happy that they accomplished what nobody really thought was possible. I really enjoyed watching the US play throughout the tournament, and the fact that they didn't win it all is immaterial. They had a hell of a run, and looked like a force to be reckoned with. I'll enjoy the teams that are left, too.

Speaking of baseball-vice-soccer, I can console myself thus: My dreams of a UT Longhorns - USC Gamecocks matchup in the College World Series championship game are still alive. Hook 'em 'Horns! (Not an easy or safe thing to say in Columbia, SC, home of the Gamecocks.)

I'm not saying I don't care. I haven't watched any of the World Cup primarily because I get neither ESPN nor Telemundo. I'm just saying that many, if not most, don't give a damn about championship soccer/football unless there's an opportunity to drunkenly shout "We're number one! We're number one!"

I'm assuming it's more indicative of where I live, (Boston) rather than any true American groundswell for soccer, but I must say the World Cup has been the topic of conversation at work, at the café where I get coffee in the morning, and amongst even my non-soccer-fan family and friends. This morning watching the game, I heard shouts and cheers from all over my apartment complex as the game progressed.
So we may not yet be near the level of other nations in terms of awareness, but I think that's improving, and looking at the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, it would appear others believe it well.
Congrats to the US team, that was a hell of a run.

Our lead scorers have 2 goals this world cup...McBride and Donovan....I think they only have 3 or 4 world cup goals EVER. Don't get me started on how many Rinaldo or Little Rinaldo have.....

Well, they should've brought their gear over to the North End (Italian section). We had trouble getting into places they were so full - obviously when Italy was playing but the crowds for other games were good too. The other issue: While I'm used to dragging my Arsenal-loving ass (arse?) to pubs at ungodly hours for the EPL, I don't think it would occur to most Americans to hit a pub/bar before lunch. An espresso from Café Della Sport at 7:25am is more much likely than a Guinness at the Irish Embassy (my soccer haunt of choice). In any event, it'll be the TV ratings that tell the story.

Well, all the Irish bars in New York were packed, I'll tell you that. I was watching the game with my German boss in a packed pub in midtown.
And c'mon - the defender on the post was *clearly* over the line, even if you don't want to give us the hand-ball call (I still think he leaned into it) - the ball was all the way over the line when it hit him to deflect out.
And all the yellow cards! Reyna didn't even touch him on that penalty they scored on - it was perhaps the only time we shouldn't have gotten a penalty.
Oh, oh - and how about McBride getting clocked in the penalty area? HUH? HUH? That should have been a penalty shot for the US.
Sheesh. I was really hoping for an England - US cup game, but should have known that after England lost to Brazil, the US was going to lose, too. Just one of those days.

Actually I got very sucked into the World Cup this time around. And I'm very upset that Germany beat the U.S. There's something very frustrating about losing 1-0. It doesn't seem conclusive enough. Are we really sure Germany was the better team (or pitch or side or whatever the hell you call it.)
