links open windows

links open windows is a bookmarklet I wrote which evolved from my 'links open windows' checkbox. Drag this to your toolbar (like you did with deepleap) and with a click you can cause the links on any page to spawn new windows. In a few cases (like the Guardian weblog) you might want to do the opposite, and follow links in one window. Enjoy.

More of an explanation: I've always known how to "Open in New Window" from the context menu in IE, and I love the IE add-on which allows you to open a particular frame in a new window. I appreciate that you've always made the "new windows" optional in your own log. This is the first time I've seen the option to not open some peoples' links in a new window. I may have to try my hand at modifying this into a "Open links in top window" bookmarklet to break out of frames, especially full-window frames that serve only to mess up linking (like The Register).

Goodness, this is wonderful. No more right-clicking to open in a new window, which is what I do constantly.

Ditto, these now have a home on my bookmark bar... The bookmarklets page is so freakin' cool (sorry If I sound like I've been living under a rock, I've never seen these). thanks!

Bookmarklets are brilliant. I use several all the time, such as Search Google, and the bookmarklets for Blogger and Deepleap. (I actually have to clean out my Links bar soon, there's too many things there I don't use getting in the way of the things I do.) I'm trying to write one using a regexp and I can't quite get it right, but hopefully soon. There are two small practical things that it could accomplish that webloggers everywhere will thank me for ... :)

Did you guys know you can shift-click to open in a new window as well? It's a lot easier than right-clicking then selecting "Open in a new window". At least to me...

And Dan, I had the same problem with a crowded Link bar. I ended up changing everything to one- or two-letter descriptions. So the bar looks something like:

[]A []D []S []6 []8 []sp []e []dl

and so on...

On Macintosh, a command-click will accomplish the same thing. The funny thing is, for all the time I've spent working on the checkbox & bookmarklet, I never use them -- when I'm surfing, I've got one finger on the command key at all times.

Yeah, Shift-click to open link in new window, but to open link on same window you can drag the link to the Address bar in IE. You can also drag-and-drop links between windows.

My links toolbar was very crowded too, now I have folders on it. I prefer this to two-letter "descriptions" that I would have trouble remembering.

Yeah, I'm going to do the folders thing. Dave's idea makes me shudder. :-) That's when you're in too deep: you actually USE all those obscure buttons ...
