Yahoo released their mp3/CD/other media player today, complete with skins. How long until there is a Yahoo! browser?
The player has a browser in it, just like Winamp. So there ya go.

I think the term should be "If it ain't broke and doesn't look like shit, don't fix it."

The Yahoo player relies on Windows technology (or component): you need IE and Windows Media player installed to use it.Jakob Nielsen makes a good case of the Finance Vision Yahoo (the Player was not available at time of writing) in that by reusing existing technologies the user already has on his hard drive, it can keep the size of the application down to less than a megabyte.
I'm not for reinventing the wheel, but first, if I don't use IE and MediaPlayer, I still need to install them, plus, I think a good programmer can put a lot better code than the IE rendering engine and media player in less than a megabyte.

Lemme guess in a few months we'll have new 'media' players, namely "AltaVista Media Player," "Lycos Sonique" and perhaps someday a totally free, revolutionary media player created by the people at OPD that will only play your files when an editor from DMOZ approves it. :)

Companies with lots of money buy things. It's what they do.
