Shannen Doherty has passed away from cancer at age 53 (NYT, BBC, People, Variety). The actor is known for roles in, among other things, Heathers, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Charmed.

Never got into Charmed, but loved her in Heathers and - especially - Beverly Hills 90210. Awful to die at that age.

She was my first small screen crush, playing Wilford Brimley's granddaughter on Our House. I am glad her suffering is at an end, but, good lord, 53? Too soon. Fuck cancer.

The shock of gleeful malice at when she stepped into the head bitch's (red) shoes was an iconic moment in one of my favorite movies.

My tail of GenX knew the OG brat pack of course, but Doherty was much more of one of us.

How terrible! I grew up watching Charmed, and remember learning (in a "really? time existed before me?!" kind of way) that Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano were a big deal before they were on the show. Shannen Doherty's character left after a couple seasons -- possibly due to drama between her and, uh, everyone -- and I kept watching, but always thought the quality went way down without her. It was funny to hear that Doherty had such a tempestuous reputation; I was 11 when the show started, and identified with the serious and responsible character she played. (Prue was also the best at using her witch powers, and had the most interesting job, and I thought she was the prettiest, too.)

"Our House" was my favorite show when I was in middle school. She has such effortless big-sister glamour.

She was a talented and entertaining actor with some pretty objectionable political positions. I had always hoped that she would be able to live and change those views. Her family and friends have my condolences.

I can't lie her Heather Duke combined with Winona's Veronica led to a lot of probably less than smart relationship choices as a younger man.
