Not just a nostalgic trip. The fascinating story of Erno Rubik, inventor of, well take a guess.

A very intriguing site is speedcubing.com. The videos in the multimedia section are unbelievable.

(Speaking of useless feats requiring absurd dexterity, cup stacking gives speed cubing a run for its money.)

I remember reading that article in Discover when it came out. I also remember the name of that mathematician, Morwen B. Thistlethwaite (hey, who couldn't?), today considered some kind of expert in "knot theory".

I'm glad to be reminded that Martin Gardner never had the patience for the cube -- neither did I. I did solve four sides once. But I was more fascinated with the brilliant internal structure. I didn't quite seem to be able to match that with the spatial reasoning that would allow 52-move solutions.

Oh: Plan now to be at the 2003 Rubik's World Challenge.

I always preferred the Rubik's Magic, but that's probably because I actually managed to solve that one all on my own. :)
