Forbes is right. The world would be a lot more fun for all of us if those shallow young people would forget about coolness and focus on recreational mathematics instead. A wave of technical innovation would solve our problems, and the population would decline due to lack of sexual activity. Whooo-hoo!

How interesting—Mr. Stein is writing from the future, perhaps? (the date's wrong.) Still and all, it doesn't make him any more precise.
How could he fail to leave off "apotheosize the rich?" And I'd like him to tell all the people in prison under Rockerfeller-like drug laws that our society has been "elevating drug use" to a cool social status—I'd bet they'd really be surprised.

I bet you could trace every single one of the problems he states right back to Ferris Beuller. That's all this column is, is Ben getting back at his arch-nemesis from so long ago.

I, for one, want to welcome our new overlords from the future. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted MeFi fuckwit, I can be helpful in rounding up others to polish the brass knobs, dials and other scientific-looking doohickies on their time machines.

I apologize in advance for the snarkiness, as I do enjoy the theory that Ferris Bueller might be the root of the problems outlined in Ben Stein's article, but it was actually Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) who was Ferris's arch-nemesis, not Ben Stein.
Jones has even made headlines of his own lately, and not for anything good.

FerrisI'm sure Ferris and Mr. Stein have had their run-ins as well. Ferris' not being in school that day prevented us from seeing that side of the all-too-complex undercurrent of hatred Mr. Stein would obviously harbour towards a slacker like our hero, Ferris.
