the meek shall inherit the trickle-down. it doesn't matter what we say or how many of our children die. the rich boy born with a coke spoon up his nose is constructing his legacy. why do you hate america so much? don't you WANT there to be a LOTR3?

I would just like to say that for the past month or so I have been unable to hear the words "Chief Inspector Blix" without hearing it in Kato's voice form the old Pink Panther movies.

Oh, good - a link to article guessing at what Powell may or may not say at the UN today, in the absence of any real information because, of course, Powell hasn't actually spoken yet and oddly enough didn't bother to supply an advance copy of his remarks. I for one cannot wait for this "real time commentary" we're being promised, as MetaFilter has proven time and again to be incredibly poweful and enlightening as a venue for political discussions. Surely this "real time commentary" will only to the depth and bipartisan tenor of the resulting debate.

(Wait! LOTR2 is gonna have a sequel?!)

Every time I drive past the CATO Institute here in Washington I'm compelled to say out loud, in my most outrageous French accent, "No, CATO!"

Powell's speech is pretty convincing so far though, I must say, from a previously anti-war position. We'll see if it does the trick for me.

NO, CATO! NOT! NOW! CATO!

Inspector Cleuseau (Blix) is sitting right there, I wonder if he's gonna whack himself in the forehead in a second a la Chris Farley and yell out, "Stupid, stupid, stupid!"

Camel Pox, now that sounds fun, or how about hemhorragic fever, mmm, I'll take some of that please!

I like how he makes sure to show a French made Mirage spraying the quasi-anthrax, "how you like that, France?"

"...tens upon tens upon tens upon thousands of teaspoons of anthrax." It's like ten thousand spoons, when all you need is a smoking gun.

For your deliberation, here's the convicting part of the telephone transcripts:

Arab 1: What?
Arab 2: What?
Arab 1: What?
Arab 2: Yeah, yeah.
Arab 1: Yeah.
Arab 2: Yeah.

Now, does Ambassador Negroponte really need an earpiece to listen to his own Secretary of State?

Don't wait for the translation, indeed.

Seriously though, Saddam was given a clear and fair last chance, and he rejected it. Ulterior motives or none, the will of the Security Council must be enforced, and war is the only way. Coalition war through the United Nations is now justified, as stated unambiguously in resolution #1441, and I believe it will happen.

See, we need to bomb them because they used a word that translated to 'evacuate'.

Full speed ahead.

If a military state exists to protect the merchant class and their interests, then I'm happy to go along with this when the merchant class pays for this 'protection racket'. Thus far, I see tax cuts for the 'wealthy'. The 'wealthy' aren't willing to pay for their protection.

Beating up on the lower middle class and middle class to pay for this war effort to displace someone the US Government helped put into power and keep in power is NOT something I'm in favor of.

Powell is producing 'data', and I'd love to believe it true, but the history of governments is filled with deception. *sigh*

Really, this is what I wanted from Bush a long time ago. I wanted the "evidence" he kept talking about, this seems to be that evidence. I'd like to check out some of those photo's and see some independent translations of the tapes, but this is some pretty good stuff from Powell, who I like apparently most Americans trust quite a bit more than Duh-bya.

I'd be interested to see if Germany, France, Russia and China attempt to refute any of said evidence...or, of course, how Iraq responds.

They prolly wanted to build everything up so they had all their efforts well documented.

they have unmanned aerial vehicles? how clandestine...
oh wait, we go those too...

but they COULD use them for dispensing chem weapons

three months ago?
it took three months (10 years) and all the collective resources of US/British intel to come up with this... makes the evidence a little less compelling.

Yeah, I hear what Powell has to say, he's convincing, I'll take it under advisement. I'll listen to the breakdowns, the comments from the Germans, the Iraqi rebuttal ("He's a lier," no doubt) but I get what Powell has said today so far, I too can't understand why this wasn't done months ago when they tried to get the resolution in the first place, or before that even?

RE: the UAVs. just because they flew 500km in a circle doesn't mean that the downlink supports that range.
posted by machaus at 8:38 AM on February 5, 2003

3 months ago? If they started the war that quickly the clatter might die down by 2004 election-time. That's Bush's only prayer...

From Scrappleface:

Powell Changes Speech at Last Minute to Satisfy Democrats
(2003-02-05) -- ... U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, at the eleventh hour, has altered his presentation to the U.N. Security Council to try to satisfy the concerns of Congressional Democrats, as well as U.S. critics elsewhere in the world.

Previously, Mr. Powell planned to show images and documents demonstrating that the Iraqi government has weapons of mass destruction and is deliberately deceiving U.N. inspectors.

However, the White House has become convinced that even with such evidence, the U.N. and Democrats in Congress will still oppose action to disarm Saddam Hussein.

So, instead, Mr. Powell will present the following accusations against Iraq:

--Saddam Hussein personally owns guns, and uses them.
--Iraq produces oil, the combustion of which will doom the planet to a second ice age.
--Saddam supports the death penalty and uses it.
--Some Iraqis, including government officials, drive Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV).
--Saddam believes Iraq is better than other countries.
--Saddam is decisive, often seeing issues in black-or-white terms, rather than countless shades of grey.
--Many Iraqis are meat eaters.
--Many Iraqis are "pro-life," opposing abortion.

A few Democrats who have previewed the script for the presentation expressed outrage at Iraq, and wondered why President Bush has not previously gone public with this "damning evidence."

"We are ready to authorize the use of overwhelming force," said one unnamed Senate Democrat. "This crazed dictator must be stopped before his ideas spread throughout the region."

I'm wondering why he hasn't talked about where Iraq developed the knowledge and technology to produce these weapons, oh, yeah, we gave it to them.
