A Blast From The Past: Ass Chaps Man A piece of classic American Webiana, still hilarious after all these years. Does anyone know of other classic Web pieces that somehow missed the MeFi front page, probably because they were so well known at the time? [ With thanks to quonsar. Safe for work, I'd say, but a close call.]

Miguel,
I was just thinking about old "webiana" and considering posting to MeFi about it, but couldn't find links, or references, to the sites I was remembering. Thanks for bringing up the topic for me.
One site I recall was put up by a guy who was documenting the bad drivers he encountered as he commuted to work each day. He would post pictures and witty/snarky comments about each driver.
I first saw the site in late '94 or early '95, and followed it for a couple months, until it was taken down because the guy switched jobs and no longer had to commute.
That's my story. Carry on.

Them were't days! When men wore chaps and women took surrepticious pictures of them. How wonderful this interweb thing seemed in those halcyon days etc.
The kid taking photos of burnt out twocs near Glasgie was one of my favourites. I think it was on this mofo tho'.

Hilarious. The photos that she captures of people looking at him are a riot.

Shelleyness had a wealth of stuff but took most of her archives down. I'm still checking her site every now and then in case she feels moved to repost something else.
I do remember the commuting Hall of Shame page, all the more because digital cameras were rare then. I think the author and his passenger were traveling over a pass near Silicon Valley on a daily basis.
Every time someone brings up smelling stuff over the web, I have to remind them of RealAroma which dates from 1996!

Wayback's got your back: Highway 17 Jerque du Jour commuting hall-of-shame page, written up at San Jose Metro (and at closing); HotWired; and even CNN.

Wow... CNN's web design in 1995 was, well, so spartan!
