But, but, but, this guy's coworker sent it to him so it must be real! I read it on the internet, so it's true!
I guess it was too good to be true, replace the originally linked image with this one. Still impressive that some of the area is blacked out.
(note to self: you should really read those snopes update emails you get every week before posting here)

any wonder there was a blackout in the first place - do we really need all those f*cking lights on anyway?
we had no street lights where i grew up (no power for that matter) ... nor do i think we needed them.

I don't understand the mentality that fakes something like that, unless it started life as a simulation and lost its explanation along the way.

Its still a cool concept shot but I'm bummed its not real.
Re: Andrew's comment above.
I find it amazing what a tragedy one night of no power in New York has been and how everyone on the east coast and around the world thought it was the funniest damn thing ever when California was having its rolling blackouts.
But then, I never lost power because I was next to a coast guard station in the harbor and then get special power from special power stations. Or something like that.
Just felt like jabbering for a moment.

Y'know, while I wasn't actually suspicious I did wonder at the total absence of cloud cover over seemingly a quarter of the globe. The snopes article explains that when they say it's a composite image.

I wondered why during the blackout it was literally black in there affected area. Was this done in MS Paint? At least use the dropper tool to pick some of the color of northern Manitoba for chrissakes so it doesn't look so fake.

Ok, so nobody posted a link to the original image. This image too, is not "real", in that it was pieced together from many, many different photos of the world to get the full, cloudless, nighttime view.
More info on this image is available from the Astronomy Picture Of the Day.
