Lucky Cat

Maneki Neko is a cat figurine, sits and has it's front paw raised as if it is calling for luck, fortune and customers to your store, and invites happiness to your home.
Here in Vancouver, there has been an explosion of figurines that have an automated beckoning arm.
My wife refers to stores with Maneki in the window as being "cat-positive."

I just remembered a Bruce Sterling story about Maneki Neko.
Of course, I read it during an all-night crunch at work, so the details escape me. But I remember it was cool and geeky. And that it wasn't the sleep dep telling me so!

I remember that story. Some secret society or something.

Maneki gave us good luck on our recent roadtrip to Oregon.
I took this picture with my camphone recently and liked it so much that I now plan on shooting regular "vacation pictures" for Maneki. The cat gets around...

And yes... Maneki watches out over our dashboard, thanks to the miracle of Velcro!

Mighty Girl forever colored my opinion of the kitty with this quote:
Walking past a head shop on the Haight, I notice a Maneki Neko (Chinese lucky cat) in the window. This one is made of plastic and is battery operated, so the raised arm moves up and down. As I pass, the cat's arm movement is perfectly timed to the music blaring out of the shop's door. For the moment, Maneki Neko is rocking out.posted by KnitWit at 8:09 PM on December 5, 2003

Hey I am not even a pet person. Be grateful I don't own a cute cat or a cute dog. :)
