Negroponte brings the Iraqi Freedom

"Iraq will be a free, independent country, and America and the Middle East will be safer because of it." and part of this process is appointing an Ambassador. The leading candidate for this job? US ambassador to the UN and former US ambassador to Honduras, John Negroponte.

You know, I really wanted to believe those rumors a week or so ago that the leading candidate was Paul Wolfowitz - there would be such a perfect little irony to tossing Wolfowitz into that cesspool and watching him go down...

Not quite sure why the administration would go with Negroponte, unless the "leak" was only to test the waters and pull a bait and switch. This move really looks bad if it comes to pass. Then again, who'd really want to be the first ambassador to Iraq?

On the plus side, Negroponte is a fun name to say.
Part of me is wondering if the Bushies are doing this for their own kicks to see how long it can go before the press catches up with them. Like the Kissinger thing. It was about a week or two from when they announced Kissinger for the 9/11 commission before outcry prevented it, maybe they're just thowing the worst possible person at this again to see how long it takes before they have to retract it. That's the best explanation I can come up with.

They should seek out what I have been calling for since a year ago: a democratically minded Iraqi strongman, someone who will work with the coalition forces, provide decent government, and move eventually toward a more open political system."
Perfect! Now if only there were someone willing to be that strongman... Well, the INC just gave me some intelligence that says that every politician and leader in Iraq who isn't named Chalabi is a terrorist. Guess we'll have to go with him.
Maybe Chalabi-as-strongman will provide steady leadership in times of change.

Here is some background on Negroponte and Honduras.
I am mildly curious about when GWB and supporters will start showing some outrage over the brutality and dictatorships and "mass graves" we helped create in Central America, given their supposed outrage over conditions [we helped create] in Saddam's Iraq.
Should be any day now on....the outrage thing.

Although, expect Bush to note that while mass graves and disappearances happened in Honduras while Negroponte was ambassador, the UN didn't experience a rise in such activities while he's been the US ambassador.

It wasn't public outcry that stopped Kissinger's appointment, it was his unwillingness to divulge his criminality, and the myriad conflicts of interest he had in his business dealings. Until recently, the Bushies never let public opinion (or the facts, or the law) stop them from doing the wrong thing.

Well, there's credible research into the power of the human mind to influence physical matter at a distance, but there's a basic problem anyway :
As many Americans as there are, far more Muslims have been convinced that the US invasion and occupation of Iraq is an evil enterprise.
And the mental energies of the Muslim world may be inherently stronger due to Islam's prophibition on the consumption of alcohol.
