Diary of a truck stop cruiser. "B.J. Cruiser," a self-described obese gay man, shows us that California highways teem with repressed, married truck drivers waiting for an insatiable man like him. Can this blog possibly be for real? Hilarious text not safe for work.
You mean that rest stop scene from "There's Something About Mary" wasn't just a joke?
What's funny is that I'll pull over at those same truck stops and "vista points" to nap when necessary on trips between the Bay Area and SoCal. In fact, at the one he mentioned just north of Tracy, I remember catching a few winks there myself once at 4am when I could go no farther without getting dangerously drowsy. I'd never thought twice about pulling behind a parked truck at those places, since I've yet to witness anything resembling what this blog described.
I've also always kept my doors locked. Look, I'm just trying to catch some shut-eye here.

DaShiv,
Count me in your ranks. I've pulled over and stopped at a number of rest areas, not really thinking twice about it.
This is despite a number of reports of 'prostitution rings' being busted at the closed 'scenic outlook' on route 91 in Mass.
I never saw anything suspicious, though I'd been warned not to go walking in the woods above the area.
If this does go on, then, at least it seems to do so without disturbing others who use the facilities.
Let's hear it for ______.

God forbid you should be exposed to homosexuals. 'Gay' does not nescessarily mean 'dangerous', but for some reason it still does seem to imply 'scary'.
News flash: While you are sleeping, others are having sex. This is as true for the car next to you at a rest stop as it is for the room next to you at a hotel. Sorry to have to dig your head out of the sand, there, sparky.
And like you both kind of pointed out, you were left to sleep in peace, never saw anything, weren't attacked, didn't become gay by osmosis, and up until the moment an insider broke the secret, you probably never would have known anything was going on. So what, exactly, is the big deal? Sure it might not be the safest or smartest or cleanest behavior in the world, but these are grown men making grown men decisions.

ChasFile: I'm with Busithoth on not wandering around the woods surrounding rest stops. All kinds of rough people are milling around those places. If you're looking to mug someone, well, you're already in a remote location and the getaway is easy enough with the highway right there. It's just not a safe place to be strolling around with your guard down. I thought that was common knowledge. Throw prostitution into the mix and things only look more grim.

crank: Perhaps, but that wan't really the point of the FPP nor my comment.
I was responding to the implication that gay people having sex inherently makes an area dangerous. They seem to be saying, "Well, I used to stop in rest areas all the time and not think twice about it. But now that I know gay people are having sex there, well, I'll not make that mistake again!" Hell, the more people there are in remote locations, having sex or otherwise, the safer I feel; just that many more witnesses and good samaritans.
In addition, I refuse to live in fear and don't buy into the philosophy that I should. If I wanted to, I could find a reason to be scared of just about every location on Earth. There is, as you call it, 'common knowledge' about the dangers of everywhere, because there are dangers everywhere. That's life. But I like cities [urban predators], I like the woods [gay rapists], I like subways [crackhead homeless people], I like airplanes [terrorists], I like my vehicle [carjackers], and I like my house [burglars]. I will take logical precautions, as everone should, but I refuse to draw my cognitive map based upon where I can't go.

Also, nowhere in the blog, from what I have read, is prostitution ever mentioned. Hence the quotes Busithoth put around 'prostitution rings'. Your assumption that annonymous gay sex = prostitution (as opposed to annoymous heterosexual sex = being a 'playa') is yet another example of the bias and prejudice that so often erupts when people discuss it. That was what I was trying to address.

Oh come on. I think the fear is coming upon two people having sex. That happened to me on a trail once, and as gay-friendly as I am, it was not something I needed to see.

Um, nobody said anonymous gay sex = prostitution. The comment that mentioned prostitution didn't say anything about gay sex. Comments go off on tangents often here.

I read no such sentiment in those comments. The poster was really just saying they had no idea that their own behavior so closely resembled those of the 'cruiser' in the FPP.
Putting quotes around "prostitution rings" would generally imply that the quoter doesn't believe they are so.
The quoter also put quotes around 'scenic overlook'... I wouldn't say that implies he believes scenic overlooks don't actually exist...

Have you seen my website link in my profile, Chasfile? While I'm straight, I'm not exactly afraid of "the gay." I don't know why you're reading homophobia in my comment.
From the linked blog:
This little faggot (and I'll use that word sparingly here, and only for emphasis when the details merit) passes my car, stares me down, and parks right behind me. I watch him walk up to the passenger door and pull on my locked door handle to get in. He bends down to meet my stern gaze, and I shake my head no, you rude person.
If I thought rest stops were "dangerous" just because some gay people may or may not be having sex there, I wouldn't have stopped there to begin with. My point is that because I hadn't witnessed any hanky-panky going on there myself, keeping my door locked to discourage unwanted encounters was the only thought I had really given this "cruising" phenomenon, despite having on many occasions used those rest stops for, you know, resting. Including some of the very ones mentioned in the blog.

Actually, scarabic, I think the fear is getting jumped and having your shit stolen. I don't think it's a sex-specific thing. It's just that rest stops are kind of considered high-crime areas.

Obese is 30% of more over 'normal' weight. 'Normal' weight for someone who is 5'9" (average American male) tops out at around 162 lbs (according to the American BMI scale), this would place obese at around 210lbs, which, surprisingly, is not hard to carry at all. I bet more people are obese than you'd realize.. course most people assume 'obese' means someone who waddles and has roll upon roll of fat.

Jesus, talk about overreacting when you think someone is out to get the group you identify with sexuality-wise.
The guy talks about tricks, so unless there is some new meaning in The Secret Gay Underworld, I take it to mean he's a prostitute. When people are in an area and paying for sex, I consider it dangerous. Not because I'm afraid I'm going to be raped, not because I think I'm going to catch the gay, but because any area where some sort of criminal activity is taking place attracts *other* criminal activity. Think about it, if you're a tough, what better place to mug someone? The johns aren't going to call the police for fear of it being found out that they like guys going down on them, and the workers don't particularly want to get busted either.

The meaning of the word "trick" differs between the straight and gay communities. Among gay men, a "trick" can also mean a one-night stand (cf. Hollywood movie Trick: "The misadventures of two young gay men, trying to find a place to be alone, one night in Manhattan.").
