I don't know how serious this guy is, but he does have a comprehensive Fag Facts page. Some times I don't know what is good satire and what is just ignorant hate propaganda.

What is the point of this post? There was a time when I could read through MetaFilter without feeling bashed. You know tamim there isn't a requirement to make a post a day. I would hope that there are better things out on the web to discuss then random hate sites.

hate takes many forms. here we see it in the face of a twisted 19 year old. he edifies bush/cheney. safe bet to say they'd be mortified at the association. should post this shit under the heading 'freak of the week'.
posted by daddyray at 11:46 AM on September 24, 2000

and surely tamim, you can see this is not satire.

Amen to that daddyray.

I don't see the point to this post neither.

The point is that David McNamara, the publisher of the site, is either (a) a parody of a right-winger taken to the extreme, or (b) a real-life Fred Phelps-type worthy of the scorn of all good and decent people.

I feel quite bashed sometimes when I log into metafilter and see blanket statements condemning Christians as well-

I think this would have been a little clearer if tamim had said "bad satire" instead of "good satire"

It's clearly NOT good satire

If this is a parody, it's hilarious. If not, it's scary.

I am 19 years old, and as my nick suggests, I am against pornography as well as masturbation. I have 2 cats and I am a senior at Royal Palm Beach High School in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

Actually that quote is pretty funny wheather the guy is for real or not.

If you really want to feel positive about the future of the internet go to the host for this anaplastic idiot.

Brian, I am sorry if I offended you by this post. I did not intend it to be a either a gay bashing spectacle or some back handed jab at the Bush-Chaney supporters.

There are certain interesting things to notice about the site.

First of all, how seriously should I take someone who defines his world view as such: "According to James Ussher (1581-1656), Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, the Earth was created on October 23, 4004 BC at 9 AM Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)*."

Secondly, he says, "I also support limiting freedom of speech in the United States." Yet he shields his own hate propaganda behind freedom of speech.

Thirdly, how serious is a person who shows off his photo with the qualifier: "as seen on uglypeople.com"?

This might be an extremely well written satire, which gets you all riled up. Or this might be an ignorant idiot with HTML knowledge spreading his hate propaganda. If the later is true, God help us all.

Ignoring hate doesn't make it go away.

If he is indeed a hate monger, please contact his ISP via this form and let them know that he is violating the TOS by spreading slander and obscenity. Why limit emails to the ISP to complain about someone stealing your icons and pastel colored web design?

I think it's all an elaborate joke started by the stileproject or a stileproject fan.

Somewhere on the the site, or on the internet trash site, I found a link to this:

Stop Clown Porn Now

That is obviously a goof on anti-obscenity movements and is quite good. This anti-porn site isn't so good, but I doubt it is serious.

This is obviously a joke. He supports Echelon and Carnivore? What about this FAVS thing? I would venture to guess he got the fag facts from somewhere else, though.

I'm not sure it's a joke, but I've pretty sure it's not "real" (as in, I don't believe that the author of this site is who they say they are on those pages). That list of "fag facts" - as pointed out above - has been around a while (I remember seeing a version of it in soc.motss on Usenet long, long ago). This feels like a site designed to do exactly what it's doing - get a bunch of people riled up about the puerile ideas published there.

It's not real. "Royal Palm Beach" may be a school, but it's not a municipality, as a quick Google search would... aw, shit. :-)

Well, I was almost right: it's *not* a municipality. It's a 'village'.

My observation would be that it's good that pages like this *do* get posted; they make it possible to prove to people that there really are people who think like this.

In addition, it provides an opportunity to trot out one of my favorite sayings, original (I think) to me: "Defending *palatable* speech is unimpressive".

I don't think it's a spoof (though I found it pretty damn funny) ...I think it's just a 19 year old kid confused in his own sexuality...

The fact that he'd rather use "fag" instead of "gay" or "homosexual" just screams "self-loathing closet case".

Not a bash. Just an observation.

His tribute to Mussolini and Fascism doesn't read like satire. More like a very earnest high-school term paper.

Bashed??? So you are implying that linking to a site implies endorsement of the views expressed in that site?
Whether or not this particular page is real, the fact remains that some genuinely ignorant and intolerant views are expressed on certain web pages. Big deal. Are you actually allowing the half-baked opinions of some dumbass 19 year old redneck to upset you?
Brian, the next time you feel like you are being "Bashed" because a MeFi user links to a site that you find offensive, perhaps you will do what I do when I come upon a site that is not worthy of my contempt. I click the "Back" button on my browser, and I go about my day.

I don't mind links to sites that offend me as long as there is a point. If you would read my post my question was about the point of the post and that question was answered by the poster. So, maybe instead of making a post yourself this time you should have used that wonderful "Back" button of yours.
posted by brian at 11:49 AM on September 25, 2000

While I often excercise the "Back" button, MeFi is, to the best of my knowledge, intended as a discussion forum, I do, occasionally, feel the urge to...um....discuss.

Eric I think I disagree with you on the use of the word fag. I didn't want to get started on this one, but it is used as a degrading term (godhatesfags.com) so to suggest that someone that uses it does so because they are actually gay really doesn't really make sense to me. Not to mention I really don't want them in my clubhouse if you know what I mean. I find a lot of similarities between the "N word" and the word fag. Inside the gay community we find it OK to use it as slang and jokingly, but if I was walking down the street and a straight person called me by that name I would take offense. So then why do people feel OK using it freely, yet I hesitate to use the other? Please don't jump all over me again, it's just a question to encourage discussion...
posted by brian at 12:05 PM on September 25, 2000

Nobody's jumping on you, Brian... we're all grown people discussing the topic.

As for why I said what I did, I re-emphasize "self-loathing". I agree, that it's an offensive word, which he uses over and over....

From a personal experience, I knew someone with such a contempt and homophobia... the end result was his finally coming to terms with it, and coming out of the closet. He was gay all along, and his strict upbringing just wouldn't allow it.

And in Tamim's defense, my guess is the "point" to this post is : "Is this kid joking or is he serious?"
