Triumph speaks!

We've heard that Triumph was thrown out of the DNC. Here's a recent interview with comic Robert Smigel about his insult comic dog, his new DVD, SNL, Comedy Central, Adam West, and more.

Good thing. I never thought the Triumph bit was very funny, anyway.

I'm with ZenMasterThis, Triumph was a stupid skit stunt that spiraled out of control and needs to be put to sleep.

Sorry, I disagree. For example, his interviews with Star Wars fans at the opening of one of the recent movies was one of the top 10 funniest things I've ever seen on television.

He doesn't hit a home run every time, but what comic does? And I hope he was let in again. I doubt a puppet on a hand is much of a security threat.

Triumph got out of hand when he stoped being a bit and started becoming his own entity. The Star Wars stuff is quite old, in entertainment years. Releasing a album pushed his publicity envelope beyond where it should have.

Do "Fresh Air", realize that your career has hit zenith, pack it in, do something else...

From the Smigel interview:

"...I have another cartoon I’ve wanted to do about the Disney vault, which is one of the most cretinous creations in marketing history, “Sleeping Beauty is going into the Disney vault! You won’t be able to buy Sleeping Beauty for ten years.” I wanted to do a cartoon about kids who wanted to live in the Disney vault where all the good cartoons are. Then they go into the vault and there is all this awful stuff in there like Walt Disney’s frozen head and Nazi paraphernalia. Just every awful rumor there ever was about Disney is confirmed in the vault."

IMHO you gotta love a guy who thinks like that. And every time I catch the scene where Triumph gets "locked" with that real French Poodle...well...you can see where my sense of humor lies.

Robert Smigel's hit/miss ratio is better than damn near any comic writer/performer with a body of work as large as his. (He's got decades of SNL, 10 years of Conan, a season of his own very weird and excellently subversive series, a reasonably decently-selling album and a touring franchise in this damn dog puppet.) And there are still a boatload of ideas he hasn't gotten to yet. The man really is a genius.

And Triumph's pieces from the Bon Jovi concert and the Westminster Kennel Club still knock me over. It's old-school schtick, but that crap is all in the delivery, and Smigel has it down to a tee.

I thought you meant Triumph. Now that would have been scandalous.

FYI, Triumph is (probably) going to be on the O'Reilly Factor on FoxNews tomorrow night, talking about the convention.

Er, or not. Maybe next week.

I just saw him an hour or so talking looking over a balcony during the (oft repeated) "We Are Family" on C-SPAN. So he's not gone.

An hour or so ago, I should say.

chicobangs: you & I disagree on many things, but it's good to know that we agree on the *important* things in life: the absolute hilarity of "TV Funhouse."

Damn, damn, damn, I wish it would be resurrected. I've caught a few of the episodes at 4:30 am (mountain time zone) in the last couple of weeks.

Best skit: when the cat gave birth to puppies.
