F*ckNewYork-- very fitting quicktime piece (9 meg, NSFW--offensive language/attitude) concerning the upcoming Republican Convention. Links to RNC Not Welcome, and Counterconvention, but i don't think it's something they created. And a torrent here.

50,456,002 Americans voted for President Bush in 2000. A figure somewhat approximating that will vote for him in November. However poor you think their judgement, they deserve their Party's Presidential Convention. No one's saying they don't. The question is why they picked NYC, a city that never votes Republican, and was painted by them as a symbol of all that's wrong with the US last time we had a convention here (Clinton in 92). Choosing NYC was a calculated political move to capitalize on 9/11--something that won't work anymore. "What made New York go from the Great Satan to the GOP's new hometown is 9/11," said James P. As far as the convention goes, protest what's going on inside, protest the policies, but don't protest their right to have the convention wherever someone will have them. That is a bit adolescent.

Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat until just before he decided to run. It is amazing that so many prominent Republicans have allowed the glitter of Bloomberg's gold to blind them to his record as a devoted generous, liberal Democrat.

Just because a lot of people live and fuck there doesn't make it good, or at any rate any better than, oh, Jakarta or Lagos. For instance, present conditions being what they are, keeping the incredible wealths of the Met and MOMA on Manhattan island is on all fours with some corporate CEO keeping Guernica on his Chris Craft. Decentralize, boys. Some cells and some cities don't have enough exchange surface to live.

Well, it does sort of piss me off that we watched 3,000 people get atomized before our eyes because of the GOP's lackadaisical attitude towards threats faced by NYC and the country, and the apple's still a big target, and while it hasn't been made more than marginally safer (some trucks are inspected, but boats/containers, forgotten), the President's coming only seems to be a posturing of 'bring 'em on' all over again.

And personally, I'd rather not be next to an asshole sticking his tongue out at terrorists he hasn't pursued, most of whom would like to smite his ass all over midtown. The RNC's choosing NYC is for a photo-op for the rest of the country, which kind of makes an ass out of the 8 million people who live here, since he's not helping us. Don't mess with Texas? Don't fuck with New York.

I also think that both conventions taking place in the Northeast is moronic, one of them should have taken place in Ohio, or some other swing state. I know this was decided a long time ago, but still.

Oh, and the video's still downloading, so I can't comment on that yet.

Local politics are notoriously irrelevant to national politics. My state, Massachusetts, has had a Republican governor for 14 years. When's the last time we voted for a Republican for president (or Senate, for that matter)? (Answer: Reagan in '84)

It's satire in a style more reminiscent Da Ali G Show than anything remotely urban. Nigger isn't used in this clip, as was pointed out by inksyndicate. It's a terrible point to argue if you're not familiar with it, but the hatchet has long been burried for many regarding satire and comic us of the terms "nigga", "jigga" and various words pop culture has coopted. Dave Chappelle does a brilliant bit about a caucasian family called The Niggers. I understand that some people are still sensitive to the use of the word not in a historical or academic context, but the skit actually nearly injurred me I laughed so hard.

So while Bush may have no chance in Massachusetts, it would inaccurate to say that "Massachusetts never votes Republican."

We're talking about the Republican National Convention, Steve. Don't be obtuse. Obviously, the implication was that NYC never votes Republican in the presidential election. And if that wasn't the implication, I'm saying that jonmc's point about Bloomberg and your point about Giuliani are irrelevant.

To deny that NYC is a democratic stronghold because they have a left-leaning republican mayor is just plain stupid.
