Neat. Great link! There's stuff like this all over the web (in a lot of audio / home recording forums), but this seems to be very, very active. I'm sure there are some gems there but, in my experience, the majority is shred-head stuff. I'm just not impressed by the fastest-finger school of guitar playing. I'm impressed most by big, hooky riffs, which most of these guys haven't quite got a handle on (even a good, creative shredder doesn't necessarily make a good rhythm player).

Still, I love listening to it (if only because 75% of it is just so, so bad).

I sense a great disturbance on the net... It's as if millions of guitarists all suddenly masturbated at once, then were suddenly broadcast.

That cover of Cliffs of Dover is pretty fucking impressive... call it masturbation if you will, but it still took a measure of ability that only a handful of people on the earth will ever have. Of course, the same could be said for competitive cup stacking or insanely high word per minute typing contests; it doesn't make it art. still, like I said... impressive!

I love how supportive everyone is, even when the guitarist isn't particularly good. The feedback is almost universally positive and constructive. It's so rare to see that kind of forum online these days.

waxy - I was thinking the same thing. Nice to see a community rallied around a shared love, and feeding each other's enthusiasm.

Why, when I was a kid, we had this thing called Metafilter, and everybody got together and shared ideas and educated each other, and even when there was debate it was generally civilized and respectful, and it was like we were all working together toward a goal of mutual edification and enlightenment. Yes, things were different back then...

And yeah, that Halsey guy has major chops. Nice.
