See Slovenly Peter!

Struwwelpeter or Shockheaded Peter, twisted tales by Heinrich Hoffmann in Germany circa the 1840s.
My wife was traumatized as a child by the story with the thumb-cutter-offer. I thought this had been on the Filter before...could be wrong.
Also, any excuse to scare the bejeezus out of the little ones is OK by me.

The main page did appear on the Filter: here. (I only remember because I posted it)
Interestingly enough, your comment was about Struwwelpeter. I think this means that the circle is now complete. :)

Struwwelpeter's all over Frankfurt a.M. There's a bar or restaurant named after him in Sachsenhausen, and I think there might be multiple hair salons.

If you ever get a chance to see the aforementioned play then do so, it's fantastic. Especially if the Tiger Lillies are in it.

Absolutely! The play was one of the best pieces of theatre I have ever seen in my life. I hope it comes back here, although it's a good excuse to go to New York.
