Also...the second to last equation could also lead to:

Girls=-Evil
(since the square root could be negative or positive)

Therefore, since Good is the opposite of Evil:
Girls=Good.

Well, if you wanted to be technical it'd be girls = (+/-)evil. So it'd lead to girls are good and evil, which is obviously the truth. This "equation" was perhaps good for chuckle when I first saw it a year or so ago, but it has definately become stale by now.

nice vacapinta, i'd never thought of that before. another major flaw in the proof is that the word "and" usually connotes addition, not multiplication, so "girls require time and money" would be "girls = time + money."

There's a flaw in the equation.
We all know girls require time and money.
That's time + money, not time x money.
So,
Girls = Time + Money
Time = Money
Girls = 2 x Money
Money= root of evil
Girls = twice the root of all evil
Is that better, or worse?

One link is enough, if the subject is interesting, because the people commenting will most of the time provide further links, usually covering both (or all) sides of the debate. On the other hand, don't expect much, as it's Xmas time and people are preparing for serious fun rather than serious issues. Also, please take it easy with the newbies. It takes some time to adjust to MeFi.

I've been contemplating the premise that "only gay men can be good."

Many friends have said "you're a good guy" to me. Are they calling me gay? Does wondering this make me a homophobe? Does killing ants with a magnifying glass when I was nine qualify as enough badness to keep me from the "good" column? What if I'm mostly bad but have latent good tendencies? Everyone's latent, right?

This reinforced my instinct that although a n00b (and a long time lurker who wanted to join more to support the site than anything), I was on the right track as to a post that would be of interest to MeFi.

You appear to be confusing "symptom" and "cause". I would suggest that a six-year-old boy who "grosses out" at the thought of "girl cooties" has been taught some very strange lessons about how human beings with different chromosomes should, and do, get along with each other.

Thought experiment: would a six-year-old African American child who "grosses out" at the thought of "white cooties" be expressing a deeply-rooted biological impulse manifested by children since time immemorial, or exhibiting a symptom of a larger social problem?

Having said all that, I don't perceive this as "misogyny", but rather "embarrassing immaturity". Which goes fine with my morning coffee, but not as well as a raspberry scone. Or a pancake.

I gave up Fark and waited for Metafilter to open up membership precisely because I was sick and tired of this sort of contextless, instant gratification bullshit link. Maybe it's worth a chuckle, but it's boring after seeing it on seventeen websites, 142 newsgroups, and my coworker's cubicle wall over the last 15 years.

I'm a n00b, but I have a proposal: noobfilter, or metanoob. All of us get thrown in the sandbox until we learn how to make a proper FPP or until we get a sponsor from among the current members. That way we can properly thrash up FPPs that don't cut it without cluttering up the front page.

*sigh... Once this place goes to hell, where to next? Kuro5hin? Dear God no.

Firas, I agree that some women are sometimes sexist against men. How is that relevant to this thread? Your link goes earlier in the thread, but not to a place that appears to be relevant to your post.

Seeing your fellow humans as "the other side" is hardly an attractive part of human nature, in my opinion. I suppose for some people it might be a step up.

It's a shame that so many people in the new intake are, apparently, being forced to read and post here. I can think of no other explanation for why they feel the need to lay about them with the insult-whip and crap all over the Blue.

Because sane people who don't like an Internet community or its regular users manage to click over to goatse or whatever their usual fare may be.

Anyway. Maybe I'm just block-headed, but I honestly don't think that the diagram is anti-women as much as a tongue-in-cheek jab. (Sidenote: I mean, men love women! But anyway.)

I'm all for holding hands and empathy, but there is a natural inclination for such things as Mefites jabbing at farkers, waiters to complain about restaurant patrons, coders to complain about designers, and--in the same vein--men to whine about women and vice-versa. I hear 'men are jerks', 'men are sex-crazed', 'men are stupid', 'men are lazy', etc. all the time. Almost as much as I hear 'women nag', 'women are demanding', 'women are clingy'.

That's not sexism.

The reason I pointed to another part in the thread is to point out that a 'men=worse than evil' counterpoint exists too. I don't think that the 'men=worse than evil' diagram is sexist. Do you?

In isolation, I would find the "men are worse than evil" 'proof' mildly sexist and not very funny. Since, however, it's a parodic response to the old and well-known "girls are evil" 'proof', it does at least have the virtue of hoisting that by its own petard. Is a parodic inversion of a sexist joke itself sexist?

PS. That proof that men are worse than evil is wrong. Evil^3 is not necessarily greater than Evil^2.

in fact, i think we can assume that evil is negative, and therefore evil^3 is also negative. evil^2 is positive, yes? so, it's fairly irrefutable that Evil^3 is LESS THAN evil^2.

Sidhedevil, how is that pronounced?

I've always assumed it was pronounced "sidhe-devil," i.e. "she-devil."
