Coulter on Canada

The ever-gracious Ann Coulter on why Canada is "lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent." A foreigner's (can anyone figure out where from?) incisive media-mash highlighting some [more] nauseating drivel from rockstars of the far right. (via wonkette)

The fact that someone can believe that claim, "Canada is lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent.", and not hate America is truly baffling to me. We are bullies, and how dare people hate us. She loves that we are belligerent, coarse, powerful, and rash. She loves that we behave not like a benevolent dictator, but like a king who keeps his subjects alive only for his pleasure. What a mad, twisted sense of love of one's country.

I think a lot of this started due to Canadian Members of Parliament (such a Parrish) making rude comments about Bush - calling him a moron, for example, and stomping on a Bush doll - on national television.
I'm no fan of our Prime Minister, but if an American senator stomped on a doll of him, I'd be pretty pissed too. Whenever I saw Parrish getting ready to open her mouth on tv, I just kept hoping a giant hook would come in from the side of the screen and pull her away.
I don't like Ann Coulter either. Or that bow tie dude. Why do all those people get to be on tv?

She might be pretty though, if she weren't made entirely out of anger, evil, spite, and hatred.

If our Prime Minister had executed illegal wars and was responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of innocent people, I wouldn't give a fuck what people did to a doll of him on t.v.
Likewise, Canada != Parrish, so it doesn't matter. Allowing for reason behind the actions of those such as Coulter is a losing proposition.

That's the kind of assumption a democrat pundit would make...Even conservative Canadians are to the left of the Democrats. Hell, we just picked a socialist reformer as the greatest Canadian.
What Ann Coldsore and that Carlson guy from WKRP said are just more bellicose versions of what Canadians hear from the U.S. every single day in one form or other. Of course this fuels our smug sense of superiority since it is usually based on incredibly stupid misinformation

Ahh yes, blame Parrish for the actions of idiots south of the border. It's all Parrish's fault. (that's sarcasm btw)
Scary but true part is some Americans feel this way about Canada, what Parrish has said isn't the reason for this attitude. She may have given them an excuse but she isn't the cause of all the negative things said about us. That reasoning is too simplistic.

That individuals with such meager humanity are chosen to represent our nation on the world's stage, is proof positive of some hideous turning in time, to a period whose atrocities, we will grimly regret. Some awful machinery is working that would make her, a public voice of America.

I'm not saying Parrish is the reason Coulter et al are spouting off (do they ever need a reason)? But I saw on tv that with Bush's recent visit to Canada, American news stations were pulling out tapes of that sort of behaviour. I think without that, Canada would never have even crossed the minds of Americans. Which is how it usually goes.
Parrish got fired for publicly going after the Liberal caucus, not the Americans from what I saw.

Does anyone with an ounce of education and intelligence actually take these two seriously? Canada teamed up with the States in WWI, WWII (entering earlier than the U.S. of course), the Korean War, and most recently Afghanistan, not to mention a number of peace keeping efforts around the world. This isn't relevant to someone who clearly thinks in terms of power by commerce or force?
The seige and take over mentality that underlies these comments, coupled with woo-hoo popularity and the worship of commerce is very disturbing.

They aren't "chosen to represent us". The people who put sideshow acts like Coulter and Carlson aren't thinking about America's reputation or delivering intelligent analysis--they're calculating the amount of money they'll add to their bank account. Ridiculous positions and super-inflammatory remarks are the gold they pay to get publicity frenzies and increased ratings.

As a western canuck, I was suprised that Coulter would say that the west is all cool and where the conservatives are. Obviously, she's talking about the rural priaries, and rural Alberta specifically. (Think of Alberta as being like Texas, only it votes Democrat.)
There's gay marriage in Sask and BC. Vancouver, heck BC in general, might as well be the netherlands when it comes to drug culture. Hell, Edmonton (home town) is apparently unbelieavably liberal, this from my Wife, an American who votes Democrat.
The only thing really conservative about western Canada (imho) is that we're fiscally conservative and, at least in the prairies, we adhere to the protestant work ethic. That's it. Socially, we're light years apart, unless you hit certain rural areas (central Alberta, interior of BC, etc...) or listen to the politicians (who get their powerbase from the rural areas and pay lip-service to their causes).
Being in Coulter's good graces makes me feel like taking a shower and scrubbing till I bleed.

Last time I saw her on television (on FOXNEWS, of course), they were talking about torture, and she talked loudly in the background over the "liberal" commentator, saying things that were the logorrhiac equivalent of:
"I'M NOT LISTENING, BLAH BLAH BLAH, I'M NOT GOING TO SHUT UP, OOOOOH SAAAY CAAAAN YOU SEEEE? WHY DON'T THEY CUT HIM OFF, I'M NOT GOING TO SHUT UP, LIBERALS ARE RACIST."
She's a turd. She feeds hatred, and knows that she's doing it. She's exactly the same as second-generation revivalist tent-preachers who get into the family business and use all the same sorts of cold-reading and mailing-list trinket tricks that their fathers did.
Hate-mongering is a business now. You don't have to believe what you say to make money off it.

I really don't know what else to contribute to this thread (as most of my personal beliefs/reactions have been expressed above), except that watching this video saddened me a great deal. I understand that people are entitled to their own views, which each person in the video had, but such sensationalism isn't always the best way to solve the issue. They each said there were problems facing the Canada/US relationship, but no one suggested alternatives to the larger issue at hand. Instead of sprouting out soundclips that land them into the media spotlight, I would (for once) love to see these "political pundits" in any form of media be part of the solution, not the problem.
Or, as Jon Stewart once said, "Stop hurting America." (and in this case, Canada as well).

Bush came to visit us, media looked for interesting dog sledding stories, found none. Sadly they found out we don't have, 'kill a polar bear day in TO' so had to find something news worthy (read: shocking). I think some of us are worried about how we will be perceived by Americans and the rest of the world. I don't think Parrish got canned for her appearance on television. I think she got stomped on for her comments about not caring if the Liberals lose the next election. I must confess I highly enjoyed her, 'coalition of idiots' comment.

In point of fact, if Canada stopped exporting cheap energy to the States, the American economy would come to a crashing halt. This winter. But American arrogance is such that they just assume that paying 25% of world energy prices is their god-given right.
I fondly remember a water-skiing trip we made to California a few years ago. Two of us had Northwest Territories trucker's caps, with the white polar-bear logo on them. It was incredibly easy to convince supposedly educated and intelligent Americans that we were polar-bear ranchers. When asked, "Well, what do you feed them? ", we'd nonchalantly respond "Salmon, of course" , and that'd be it.

Don't the Canadians ever get sick of the endless Canada-bashing? Do you guys get comedians that rant against it but they just don't get coverage in the US, or are you all just very good-natured? Or is it a front? I get a sinking feeling that Canada's healthcare and superior education systems combined with a population empowered by civil liberties will create a generation of super-beings who will one day invade the US and wipe us out in the middle of our latest "Canada sucks" joke.

Did anyone see the 700 Club report on how Europe (Sweden especially) is going down the tubes because of our socialist ways? That was funny altho' if you know the reality (and I'm guessing that the average 700 viewer doesn't) it's a lot more scary that kind of stuff is aired.
The guys in this vid are what we call back in the UK, wind-up merchants. They're just trying to get a rise out of people & it's just a bit dumb.
The fact that these types pop up all over the US media in such abundance makes the US look a bit silly to this outsider (currently on the inside) but there is so much media to fill that the barrel tends to get a good ol' scraping. Near endless choice isn't always a good thing but that's a whole other discussion.

As an American, I'm a little afraid that there exists somewhere on this planet a country that we haven't pissed off yet. If so, I apologize; it is a mere oversight and I have faith that with hard work and the help of patriots like Ann Coulter we will get around to pissing off every citizen of every government in every corner of the world. (By the way, they should comsider themselves lucky that we even allow them to exist in a corner of Our World.)
It's not easy pissing off everyone when we have had to spend so much time and effort on the French, so just wait your turn.

What irritates me is that everyday this woman goes to work and people say hello and maybe new people even meet her and shake her hand and she goes on TV shows and the hosts are polite and the crews record her and make sure her mike works and all.
She's a nasty little racist hate-monger and yet apparently no-one in the media has the balls to mention it or refuse to work with her. If I was told to interview her or do her makeup or whatever I'd quit. Either that or she really did get that security escort and they're scary big.

Do you know what she spends a great deal of it doing?
Defending McCarthy. No I'm serious. She does this in a very creepy tone, also. She is sure as sure can be that Joe was the good guy and that the Communist threat was real. She asserts that the Democrats of the day were the ones with the blacklists, forcing people to name names. I think that she is no WWF-style pro personality. She has deep and real beliefs about this vitrol. It is a real cause for her. What a stupid, deluded, evil person. If she is the leading edge of something (and Tucker seems to be following in her footsteps) then we are really seeing a truly sad development. She is a post-post-modern anti-reality reactionary. Hopefully we won't breed a strain more virulant than her anytime soon.
And Canada, just take pleasure in the fact that this is not happening to you... and make sure that you never cut education spending or else it will, eventually.

Coulter? Horrid. Carlson? Idiotic.
They're both employed to be the marginal "right" voices, and they succeed extremely well. For instance, it looked like Coulter was about to throw-up when she said:
"There's French people in Canada."
She might want to look in own backyard, because there is probably more French living in the US that in all of Canada. We just support multiculturalism ideals and that means they can freely speak the language (or, their version of it) as any other nationality within the country.
This, coupled with the dog-sledding comment, and the very negative press coverage (in the US) during Bush's visit to Canada has me a little worried. I realize that these voices are hardly the voicebox of the nation but allowing them to spout their filth could engender a "grass-root" anti-Canada sentiment. Crossing the border into our "neighbour" is already bad enough, now I'll have to remove all my maple leafs.
Oh, and unsling my dog sled.
Tucker did make an interesting point when he said that a lot of educated folks decide to hop down to the US after receiving their education in Canada. This is a dangerous trend, and I know first hand that it is all too true (especially in the healthcare industry) and something this country has to address. Maybe this is a subject for an FPP.

The other week I was driving through Tacoma on my way to Portland with my dad. There on one of the overpasses stood a number of patridiots, each jumping up and down with the cheapest fucking flag on planet Earth clutched within their hands -- "Old Glory". Unfurled off to the side was a ten foot tall banner which read:

Ya know, it's not always the case that people you convince of some outlandish thing are dolts.
At least sometimes, it's simply that they're being serious in their question (ie, what do you do for a living, or what's with the hats) so that only an asshole would tell them a stupid lie back because there's just no goddam reason to lie about it, and you don't seem like an asshole.

Two things.
One, Ann Coulter, in her little mind and that of the Liberal Media, speaks for about 51% of America. That gives her the hubris and confidence to talk shit like this.
Two, an integral part of the Canadian character is the ability to take (and tell) a joke. After wheat, comedians are Canada's #2 export.
So let the little schoolyard tyrant beat her chest. There's queers that need marryin', and all this pot won't smoke itself.

Eventually Ann Coulter will get too cocky and say something that offends even her fans. Then Fox or one of her other backers will cut their losses and release a "sex tape" or a photo of her barbecuing a baby or something and she'll join all her forebears in the dustbin of history. Till then I'll just let her spew and ignore her.

Canadians: I suggest that you may have the power to end the war in Iraq, and any other American aggression along with it. All you have to do is to immediately cut off all exportation of oil, natural gas, lumber and other wood products.
This would create a crisis at home that would require us to immediately bring all those troops home... to invade Canada and get control of these vital resources.
Hmm, maybe that's not the best idea. But still, you get my drift.

she's blonde and has boobies. That is all that matters to some people. Seriously. A friend of mine moved to sweden and was going on about how amazing it was that all the girls were so hot, but when I went to visit, I didn't see it. I asked him if he'd think they were hot if they weren't blonde, and he was sort of surprised and looked around and thought about it, and agreed that it would probably seem pretty normal if there was an array of hair color. But being surrounded by only blondes! It triggers something for some guys. It's like a 'northern european fetish' as opposed to an asian or black fetish...
and jonmc, no, she's not going to say something that will 'go too far'. People love when she goes too far. 'kill their leaders and convert them to christianity?' c'mon. Her supporters will just say, "oh relax, it's only hyperbole," and they'll love the fact that her detractors are completely sickened by it. Ignoring her is the only way she'll go away. Well, and getting old won't help if she doesn't have enough cash for a good face lift, 'cause she'd disappear if she weren't giving her supporters hard-ons.

Why don't we all quit allowing fucking idiots such as Coulter and Carlson (god that guy's a shame) "speak for America"?

and jonmc, no, she's not going to say something that will 'go too far'.
Then she'll say something about the wrong person. She's definitely a narcissistic egomaniac, and people like that have the delusion that they can get away with anything, and they ultimately fuck up.
she's blonde and has boobies.
And that gets old after awhile. If somebody wants to see blondes with boobies, it takes about three seconds of googling. And they won't have to listen to her droning on and on. Which, trust me kills whatever sex appeal she might have. (not to me, she's not my type, speaking hypothethically, ...may need third nightlight to sleep tonight)

Who's Ann Coulter again, and why should I care about her opinion? She sounds like she's just another saber that the far right rattles when they're not getting enough press.

Canadian people are really some of the nicest in the world. And Toronto is a fun place with great food.

Dear Ann Coulter,
Come on up here. We'll kick your ass.

P.S. And then, when you've outlived your usefulness, and the right-wing goons you hang around with finally throw you to the sharks, and you drag yourself up here begging for help, we'll refuse to give you free health care.
And then we'll kick your ass again.
Love,
Canada

I knew nothing of Ann until I first got an internet connection a couple of years ago. Whilst trying out the internets I followed a link to a list of quotes attributed to her.
Naturally I assumed she was a stand up comedian - rather a good one, in fact. When I later discovered that she is taken seriously as a political commentator, I was astonished.
Of course she's a comedian, only it's her laughing, not you. This is the wrong way round.

"God, you're boring. Couldn't you at least come up with something more original if you're going to be so fucking juvenile and reinforce all those tired boyzone stereotypes. At least you waited, what, a day before you stopped jerking off to the anarchist cookbook long enough to delve back into it."
Yawn. I could continue to be completely unoriginal and flat out call you a bitch (thus reinforcing the boyzone stereotypes) but this is metafilter, not 6th grade. Or is it?
It's not like Ann Coulter isn't living up to her stereotypes as well. Besides, this boyzone ideology: Isn't Ann herself contributing to it? Who is making more of a disparaging statement, my opinion of Ann Coulters sexuality (which by the way was a ploy to reinforce the concept of mutual masturbation, zing) or Ann's opinion of a group of people who happen to live across some invisible line? Aren't invisible lines reinforcing stereotypes? Excuse me, now i'm just digressing. Basically, I was throwing rocks at glass houses. Whats your excuse?

The allure of possibly having a voice in the country with the most potential global impact is what keeps me here.
But do any other MeFites ever just think, "I really wish I lived in a country where I didn't have to spend half my time worrying or fighting about said country?"
"I really wish I lived in a country where I didn't have to hear Southern accents, ever again?"

cmon doug, thats like saying "I really wish I lived in a country where I didn't have to see black people, ever again?" because cops tend to bust black people. (I think its racial profiling but thats another argument)... or libertarians, etc.
insert generic, keyser sozeesque-devils advocate pander about how people should not be judged by color or accent and you should know better.

Heehee. I never said those people were BAD.
But it's well within my right to dislike their accent (especially recently; now that it supposedly represents the Values and Heart of our Great Nation).
I could've said "I never want to see another bumper sticker proclaiming that soccer players do it for 90 minutes," and that wouldn't have been offensive.
Actually. I'd like to move to a country without that, too. Hmm.
