Remixed classics!

OverClocked ReMix This great site has all sorts of music, redone with vastly superior technology and, at times, an eye towards radical reinterpretation. My old fave Metroid has provided quite a few cool reinterpretations.

I pillaged this site years ago when their hosting was essentially an always-on dialup modem. You had to wait for every song, to make sure you really wanted it. I especially like the refractive remix of the original FF prelude, and of course a simple redo of the classic Zeal theme. This stuff is pure nostalgia for me.

In the spirit of the season, I submit the incredible Super Mario's Sleighride, by the One-Up Mushrooms.

The site is mostly techno out the ass, which isn't really my thing, but if you look hard enough you can find gems like this remix of the Lost Woods theme from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and some great quasi-jazz remixes, including the happiest song of all-time, the theme from Super Mario Bros. 2.

I'm completely new to the concept of bit torrents. My first thought is "why would I want to do that?"

I love internet music, but I've always opted for streaming rather than downloading. That way I don't have to fill my hard drive with files that I may never listen to again. That becomes a data management problem.

There is so much streamable music on the net, either live or archived, that I never run out of new, interesting things to listen to. With a subscription to a source like 'Rhapsody', I can set aside favorites to listen to whenever I want to hear something a second time, yet it requires no storage on my own computer.

On the other hand, files at ocremix.org have sizes in the magnitude of gigabytes. Storing those things is a major undertaking. Also, the site suggests that one complete a download before listening to any of it. Definitely, that's not convenient.

So I have to ask you guys why should I be downloading bit torrents vs. simply listening to a audio stream. I'll try to read any answers with an open mind.

It greatly reduces server load, and saves the host money. It allows you to actually possess stuff instead of just listening to it. It also helps other people get whatever it is (since you give and get at the same time), instead of just selfishly grabbing it, or streaming it.

Oh please. Whinging about the genericness of techno isn't much different than pointing out that most rock has the same couple chords, or most rap is just a stupid redundant beat with some thuggery overlaid, or most Jazz and Classical repeats the same motifs repeatedly. Pretty much all genres find a central path; the interesting things happen as the path is explored.

That being said, trance/house and hiphop are basically what fills the clubs. So, uh, pretty decent following.

Electronica is of course a great genre, but most of these remixes (rearrangements, really) wouldn't stand up without the original tunes having been imprinted on your synapses through absurdly long stretches in front of the TV as a kid.

Uh, you misunderstood his joke. Somebody said "techno out of the ass, which isn't my thing", so his joke was about the hypothetical subgenre of technorrhea (you know, "out the ass..."). And how any subgenre that involves "out the ass" probably doesn't have much of a following. So "techno" might have a large following, but "technorrhea" probably doesn't have many fans. It was not a snark at techno, it was just a play on words on "out the ass". The same joke would work for absolutely any genre.

I like OC, but I wish someone would filter the best songs from that site from the rest. There's too many songs to download and evaluate.

Thanks for the link. I never got around to downloading all the goodness when I first saw OCReMix a long time ago, but now that they got torrents up I downloaded them all and am sifting slowly, finding excellent tracks with amazing frequency.
