That little fox-cat-mongoose is a mystery...this link (labeled ????????on the site, or "boxes, boxes, backwards question mark, lower-case H with diacritical, eagle-headed man, etc" for people with limited character sets) is in Chinese. Babelfish's translation is below:
The new cassiabarktree net - southern part of China morning paper news (Reporter Xie Kuihe decides firmly) said it is not the cat, but its steadily beard; Said it likes the mouse, it steadily gigantic tail; Said it is the fox, its wool actually assumes the yellow... ... On December 12 evening, Nanning resident Mr. Soviet catches such the animal which cannot also be said the animal animal tender the name.

On 12th evening 10 o'clock, live nearby the branch garden main road Mr. Soviet just and the colleagues watches the television in the room, "the cat" suddenly appears in front of them. Starts everybody to think is a cat, afterwards discovered it obvious is different with the cat, then encloses seizes it. On 13th the morning, reporter sees this only strange animal in Su Jia. Only sees this sharp mouth animal's mouth two sides two row of grayish white beards, the claw extremely is being steadily sharp; The neck compared to above similar build cat long two times, the sturdy tail is also longer than its body; The body wool assumes the yellow, the above has the money size the black circle, tail Mao Chengquan the shape. The people take when the meat block throws for it, its yawn gnaws.

Yesterday morning, the Nanning zoo animal branch staff came when identified, also called did not know actually it was what kind of animal.

What is this critter? It's adorable!

It's a genet (or genette). It was brought in Europe through the Muslim conquest and was used for pest control for a while, until people realised that cats were easier to domesticate. Genettes are now back to feral in Europe, but I've seen some in pet stores (that was a long while ago though). It's just weird that the Chinese zoo didn't recognise it.

I'm amazed by the babelfish translation from Chinese posted by paul_smatatoes:

"On 12th evening 10 o'clock, live nearby the branch garden main road Mr. Soviet just and the colleagues watches the television in the room, "the cat" suddenly appears in front of them. Starts everybody to think is a cat, afterwards discovered it obvious is different with the cat, then encloses seizes it."

This is actually quite understandable, although I doubt that the guy is actually called "Mr. Soviet", just doesn't sound Chinese enough to me. I knew the fish sometimes produces understandable results from "close" languages like German or Dutch, but I think this is the first time I've ever seen something translated from a completely different language that isn't total gibberish. "Starts everybody to think is a cat ..." Hey, I know people who talk that way!

Oh, and yeah, some of the animals are cute.

Thanks, elgilito. Evidently, genets make good pets, too. You know, I like cats, but my girlfriend prefers ferrets. I wonder if we could compromise...

Pandas in Panchos
Swine in Sweaters
Gerbils in Jerseys
Monkeys in Mufflers
Canaries in Cardigans

Not to mention, Tortoises in Turtlenecks!

I think this guy is playing air guitar in his sleep.

This guy is either having a bad hair day, or that beer he is drinking tastes funny.

This girl is showing off her...ugh...skills.

This is far too adorable for its own good.

My dog actually tried to do this once, albeit on the very bottom of the fridge. (When it's storming out and he's scared he tries to hide in some weird places! Yes, we got him out of there before we closed the door!)

sour cream: although I doubt that the guy is actually called "Mr. Soviet"

Funny, that. The guy's last name is ? (pronounced 'soo', a common Chinese last name). The character is used in phonic translation of 'the Soviet Union'. No wonder Fish got confused.

Good god, did anyone follow elgilito's link on the adorable genet?

"When angry, frightened or injured, the genet also secretes a powerful, foul-smelling secretion from its anal glands that deters enemies."

So much for an exotic birthday present for my girlfriend.

Try my link instead. It's not really an anal gland, and genets aren't as stinky as ferrets.
