I was going to post this similar one yesterday, until it broke. Don't mess with Flickr.

Yeah, the flickr one is too cool. Hopefully he'll get the caching problem fixed.

The letter S often brings up what appears to be a picture of famed half-demon InuYasha, while the letter L frequently brings up the words "Carmel Haitian", making my name Carmel Haitian OUI Inuyasha. Not really what I was looking for. Maybe I'll sign that on web forms from now on.

I am very sad that my tool broke. I'm trying to talk to flickr about when it started misbehaving, but no word yet (they have much more important things to worry about!).

keep hope alive ;)

Cool! I found it interesting to type in a single characters and see how many different images it found for each one.

Neat stuff - have to check out the flickr one....

The Flickr one is far better in that I can link to specific words...

Thanks, I'm glad you like it :)
that's why I did the mod_rewrite so that people could link to specific strings.

Nice. With the first picture-speller, I got a movie poster for A that didn't look like any letter until I noticed that it was for The Scarlet Letter. I wonder if I could use the resulting banners for a personal web page. For flickr, this section from General Conditions:
The Flickr service makes it possible to post images hosted on Flickr to outside websites. This use is accepted (and even encouraged!). However, pages on other websites which display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link back to Flickr from each photo to its photo page on Flickr.
and this one from Copyright:
"by setting your uploaded images as "public", you agree to allow other Flickr users to view and share your images and you therefore agree to allow us to display and store them."
seem relevant.

Yup - you can use the resulting letters, so long as you link back.
Thats why I provided a textarea to copy-and-paste from, it is wrapped in a div (flickrWords) and each img is flickrImg so you can style them as you see fit, while keeping you from having to write the html code.

have fun

Cool! I'm emailing both of them to all the teachers in my school tomorrow! What fun for letter recognition!

ancientgrower - someone suggested using this for a captcha... let me know how the machine vision goes, if it goes poorly, then captcha might be a good application for it!

PY - Thank YOU :) very cool
