Meet the NSP It was a long time ago, you understand. 1957-58, if you will. One of the best 27mb movie files you will see this year. the real story is somewhat different.

Great. Sullivan Carew's letter home is brilliant, and Dr. Fingerroot, yes. I've worked on a number of docs on African American history, including one on the Tuskegee Airmen a couple years ago, so this hits very close to home. Yay. (Oh yeah and "whites only" on the top of the capsule...heh.)

I vaguely remember that there was an African-American candidate for one of the missions back during the Apollo program, but I can't think of the name.

Thanks, yonation - I had tears in my eyes! "A film not by Ken Burns," indeed.

This was significantly better than Gay Niggers From Outer Space.

"America's love affair with racism was in full swing."
This is great. Thanks, yonation!

Cool.

Yeah, you can fake most anything. It'd be terribly easy to effect another 'War of the Worlds' type event because people are so conditioned to accept the local/cable news format.

No one actually "caught fire"... or "burned" if you will.

Very Dave Chapelle-ish, only better.

It was in one of the links, but you had to read carefully and click through.

Robert Henry Lawrence was the first African-American astronaut, a test pilot from Chicago who was named to the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory program. Lawrence died months later in a crash, and the MOL never was realized; satellite technology improved, eliminating its reconnaissance role, and its remnants were subsumed into the joint USAF/NASA program which became the Space Shuttle, and eventually the International Space Station. Mostly because he wasn't part of NASA at the time (rather than racism), he was not included in the astronaut memorial until 1998.

As terrified as the administration was of losing the space race to the Russians, they were ten times more terrified of losing it to the Negroes.

Oh my god, this is so fucking funny. That blues song about the blackstronaut "shooting up again" is dead-on perfect parody.

A full three years before Neil Armstrong, Jefferson and Hayes land their modified Cadillac Coup de Ville just east of the Sea of Tranquility. But because of the Black blackout, the accomplishment is completely buried by the mainstream media.

[Burns-style pan to tiny page 34 article, "Negroes Land on Moon."]

I wish I could remember the context in which I made this image last year.

Oh, shoot, I forgot I put in an .htaccess to stop hot linking? Anyway, it's a Photoshopped team picture in spacesuits of the first astronauts to go to the moon, Armstrong, Adrin and Collins, with Neil Armstrong's head swapped out for Louis Armstrong, har-har.
