Latest Pope News. Since things looked really bad, and there didn't seem to be a Pope thread yet, I thought the Metafilter community could use one. Plus, the recent health issues raise a lot of interesting questions, from the significance of the prophesies of St. Malachy (that say the next Pope will be the second to last Pope ever), to the stuff that Nostradamus said about the Popes, and the idea that all celebrities die in threes. So far, Metafilter has talked about Mitch Hedberg, Johnny Cochran and Robert Creeley... and thats just this week.
I'm just saying, this all makes you think...

Well, Six is still two threes. Or maybe... the start of three threes that each need one more? Wait... Frank Purdue too? This is NOT a good week to be famous...

I'm actually surprised that this lead singer of The Popes is still alive, but he is.

In Rome we're waiting for the bells, we'll see if the tradition stands.
Over the centuries, the most traditional and telling signal that a pope has died has been the tolling of the Vatican’s bells, which prompts churches across Rome to join in.
But there is also the symbolic shutting of the Bronze Door, a massive portal beneath a portico off St Peter’s Square that is closed when a pope dies and is kept shut until a new pontiff is elected.

The Pope's just another old man dying.
Old, sheltered, antiquated, irrelevant - just when I thought I could feel less interested in the drain-circling death rattles of someone besides Terry Schiavo, here comes the Pontiff.

How long are the last rites valid? Hours? Days? Weeks? If the pope hangs on for a few more days, do they perform the last rites again?

When I was a baby, my mother gave me a death rattle. I sort of liked it but it made scary noises when I shook it so I threw it away.

You perhaps forget Karol Wojtyla's resistance to Naziism in occupied Poland, or his quiet diplomacy as Pope John Paull II that helped lead to Gorbachev's reforms and the freeing of Eastern Europe form Soviet totalitarianism, and the end of the Cold War?
Or would you prefer to still be at moments from the flashpoint of nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, with half of Europe still in chains behind the Iron Curtain?

The count is higher than three. Let's not forget Bass Wolf of the band Guitar Wolf, who died in his sleep on the morning of March 31st, at the age of 38. I found out about him and Mitch Hedberg almost simultaneously, and I about fainted.
