I like in the second one how you can see that the cat isn't really trying to hurt the kid and then looks away afterwards like he's kind of embarrassed for getting all riled up in the first place.

I wouldn't trust ANY animal around a small child without adequate supervison (where "adequate supervision" = "being able to step in immediately").

I wouldn't trust a cat around a small child.
cats and small children are generally intelligent enough to work out how they should treat one another, with a little assistance from the adults in the household ... cats usually pull their "punches" when it comes to kids ... and kids quickly learn what the cat doesn't allow
