On one hand, I'd be disgusted and outraged if the conservative fringe political machine were to bring these charges against some one on "my team". There has to be a line somewhere about public and private spheres. On the other hand, hypocrisy needs to be highlighted, and Bolton is, er, in bed, with some pretty crazy people. And after Clinton, should I be expected to take the high ground on sex scandals?

To my knowledge Bolton is not one of the 'moral' anti-gay anti-sex 'oppressed Christian' right wingers. If he was, I might see a reason to delve into his sex life [as the press did with the mayor of Spokane].
There's more than enough reason to deny his appointment. His sex life ain't one of them.

I agree with Witty. Mr. Mustache's proclivities are nothing like Clinton's.
I know Witty would agree that sending a swinger--in the strictest sense of the word--as the U.S. representative to the United Nations can only be interpreted as a brilliant demarche to the French . . . Look at Jacques Chirac's own peccadillos. . . The French absolutely love peccadillos. . . John will probably receive the Legion D'Honneur Sexuale and honorary French citizenship. This will only increase his ability to perform in NY.
Now, the "sanctity of marriage" crowd may not be so pleased, but this nomination shows again how--dare I say--liberal-minded George Bush is about the level of personal sexual morality displayed by those whom he appoints to high office--if there was any question after his nomination of Bernie Kerik, of course. This proves too that the religious right does not control U. S. foreign policy, and I'm glad about that. The President clearly has his legacy to history in view with such a nomination.
I , for one, would welcome a public affirmation by Mr. Bolton of the value of public, pre-paid swinging as a prominent tool for increasing understanding of free market economics and Americal moral values among men and women the world over. As a confirmed bully, from a bully pulpit located just a short cab ride from his, erm, exciting former haunts, Swingin' John could aggressively promote world peace through Confucius' Free Trade and Love Retreat in Shanghai . . . or Ali's Republican Party Retreat in an-Najaf. . . .or Groucho's Retreat in Tbilisi (for those who dare with a revisionist Marxist flair!)
Bolton democracy: on the march and on the bone!

To a point. We have plenty of politicians who advocate locking up drug users and throwing away the key. Plenty of the same politicos liked to party back when. If draconian drug laws had been applied to the children of the upper classes [left and right] many of the fine gentlemen behind these laws would have been be locked up for life before they ever had a chance to gaze upon the beltway.
I don't care to hear much about a politician's private life, until they start moralizing - and imposing their morality on the world. And then I want to know everything. Drugs, sex, and dirty stained dresses.
If they stick to politics, then I'm willing to stick by judging them on their political record.

kanewai - Well, I guess I'm just trying to say that I'm willing to overlook past "mistakes" if someone has changed their ways, had a change of heart, recovered, thought better of it, wise-d up, grown up, etc. Not that I really want to elect a former heroin abuser to public office... it was just an example. That would be a bit extreme for me. But I wouldn't have a problem with someone saying, "Hey, I snorted coke. I wish I hadn't and I don't think you should either. Cocaine is bad news and I will vote against it becoming legal" (or whatever).

From the article, "Corroborated allegations that Mr. Bolton’s first wife, Christina Bolton, was forced to engage in group sex have not been refuted . . . ."
He forced her to engage in group sex? For crying out loud, he's practically a rapist. Is that the type of character we look for in a UN diplomat? Get this guy a room with Marv Albert and keep him out of the UN.

Bolton is a thug. I hope this report is true and helps nail the guy.

Picturing The Walrus at Plato's Retreat makes me a little squeamish, but sometimes I like to mix'n'match my FPPs; why not try imagining the 'stached one skipping wide-eyed through the Plushie Forest?

I'm just surprised he could even think of public office with that moustache. In the UK it is pretty much accepted that facial hair is a no-no, see here for a bit of background. There are some exceptions but not many.

You seem to find the group sex thing pretty funny. But here are some more serious things about mr. Bolton. Not funny; not funny at all:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and the best of all, 9.

Come on guys, this is horseshit.
"Mr. Flynt has personal knowledge about sources corroborating the allegations...
Mr. Flynt has no further comment at this time..."
And the only evidence he produces is a divorce record that says absolutely nothing except that she left him while he was on a trip abroad.
Puh-fucking-lease.
Bolton is a creep and a half, but Flynt is being an idiot here. You can't make accusations like this without backing them up.

I'm certain a multimillionaire like Flynt isn't dumb enough to print libel. Because then Bolton could end up owning Hustler. But then Bolton would want that, wouldn't he? This is all so confusing.

Acrobat, that's a collective of evidence much more shocking and compelling than any group sex stuff, certainly. If Bolton doesn't deserve nomination for a diplomatic-level appointment, those are all very good reasons why.

Larry Flint is a nullity, and you, Mr. or Ms. Poster of This Thread are equally null. And despicable.
And the poetic justice is that morons like you will actually assure his nomination. And no, I'm not about to thank you for that.

My guess is that Flynt is probably correct. However, the evidence is thin to non-existent (being pretty much Flynt's hearsay) and more importantly it comes too late in the game to matter. Even if his ex-wife came out and said he did it, I doubt it would change any votes now. This vote will not be about whether he is the right man for the job (Voinovich may be an exception), but about preserving GOP power by not flinching, no matter what.
