Still going: jazz pianist Oscar Peterson celebrated his 80th birthday on Monday, with a rare treat. The veteran jazz musician is the first living Canadian to be honored with a commemorative postage stamp.

I like his work. Some great records leading his trio and sideman with Milt Jackson and others.

Canada Post issued a series of stamps for former hockey players. Jean Beliveau, Denis Potvin, Bobby Hull were alive when these were issued. And all six (Trottier, Stanley, etc.) in this issue were alive.
/canada post quibble.

It's always striking how jazz players don't start to suck as they get old (I saw Sonny Rollins in concert about a year ago and it was fucking awesome). Whereas pop musicians usually suck before 40 (Sting, etc.). I think it has something to do with working in a commercial medium -- you can follow your ear if you're a jazz player, but if you're pop/rock your record company expects you to keep churning out exactly the same stuff.

Nice. My favorite of his recent-ish stuff is this one, with Roy Hargrove and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (who's mentioned in the above links a couple times). Damn good.

Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson is a total must have. You Go To My Head and I Get A Kick Out Of You therefrom are incomparable.
