Get the blues. Today, one of the blues' finest musicians, R.L. Burnside died.
Go on, take a look, take a listen.
Oh damn! KEXP was just playing a song by him. Must be a memorial. What a loss!

Another star in the sky just turned itself off. A sad day for music.

Oh no. One of the finest North Mississippi hill-country musicians, and a hell of a performer.

Oh shit. And Fats is missing. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Snooks Eaglin? He can't walk anymore. He's blind. Someone better have gotten him out before the storm. That's living national treasure there.
This is salt in a wound. Before this, I had avoided thinking "what happened to all the old music masters in New Orleans?" So many of them are sick, old, not well off, and of course black. And they needed the city to make their living. And that about describes the people dying all over the city today. We need a musician rescue team in that place, now. We need a fucking army division in there now. Screw Baghdad. What the hell is going on. Damn damn damn.

(I hope Miss Maybelle let him be her hopping frog)
Man, I just last week bought the Burnside on Burnside album from the music store that is across the street from where the album's cover photo was taken. I gave it as a gift to a Spanish guitar player who was interested in American blues. I hope he gave it a listen before today.

My husband and I had the privilege of seeing him play in a small venue a few years ago. It was an amazing show and he hung around afterward to chit-chat and sign autographs. Glad we got to shake his hand and say "Thank you" while we had the chance.
It's sad, you know...

I am very sad about this. When I was about six years old R.L. Burnside came and stayed at my house. My dad knew his harmonica player. It was really neat, my dad being all excited that this blues man was going to stay with us. My parents were taking my baby sister for a stroll when R.L. and John showed up and I answered the door by myself. I don't remember much else about his stay, but I do remember a week later my dad taking me to an apartment on Waco street in Wichita and watching him play in someone's apartment. For a little white kid from Burrton, Kansas it was something else and is one of my favorite life stories.

Oh and if you like those samples or already know his music but want more, they're cheap as hell at emusic.com. 50 free tracks for signing up, too. (Sign up, get the tracks, cancel. No commitment.)
