Wonderful! I have a couple of these around my home. I've been in love with this style ever since I first saw Hokusai's The Wave, but my favorite Hiroshige piece is this one.

Would a few extra words about the artist, possibly a link to a wikipedia entry and some personal reflections on the subject matter be too much to ask for an FPP post?
Something like the artwork shown on the link deserves more than just one word.

I agree. All FPP should reflect their authors understanding that whomever is reading them may not have access to the internet.

All the information may be at that link but as someone who is not familiar with the artist my reaction was "Uh... huh?" Is the goal a FPP that's a puzzle? Or was there an adjective shortage?
The boingboing folks have on their submission page the text "if you don't feel like putting useful information in this field that actually describes the link and why it's interesting, don't bother submitting at all" and I think that's a fairly reasonable position for an FPP.
Simple is beautiful but obscure sucks.

Top marks to Sarge. These are so beautiful I could cry.
I've never felt as lonely as I did when I was in Japan, and yet I miss the place more than I've ever missed anywhere. That country has a very strange effect on me, and these prints amplify the feelings. In some ways they're like Richard Scarry cartoons - so much going on inside them, and so rewarding to pore over.

See... I look at that and I'm like "oh, wow... I'm totally in the mood for... blah blah." Or "Wow, not my bag at all, but I have a friend who mentioned that he was looking for something like this."
The way it's set up now, I have no idea what I'm looking at without trying to interpret things from the comments in the body.
Anticipated Criticism: Well, then... don't click on it.
Response: I almost didn't, then I did, and I loved it. I almost missed something that I loved, because it was poorly set up.
Anticipated Rejoinder: Well tough shit, then... don't you get it? one word, simple, elegant, It perfectly reinforces my perceptions about Japanese culture, it's beautiful.
Response: Don't be a jerk. Tell me what the fuck I'm looking at. I'll do the same for you.

Me too; it's like not having heard of Monet. And if you're that worried about the unknown, you could always google "hiroshige" and find out about this mysterious entity before clicking.

I, for one, think it's a good post. Mainly because it emphasizes the artist's name. When you see a Picasso painting, you think "Picasso". Same with Rembrandt, or da Vinci. I'd seen these paintings before and read Ando Hiroshige but I would always forget his name. Now I won't.
Perhaps it wasn't even sgt.serentity's intention, but who cares? Besides we have plenty of overly-wordy posts with so many links I give up before I even start. If it's a complex subject with many different points of view, and surprises, then yes, multiple links are good. But, come on, if this site isn't enough you can go to Wikipedia, enter in "Ando Hiroshige" and get your precious info.
Research is nice, but simple can be a good thing.

He has many interesting photos of Belgium on his website.
There are also many evocative pictures of Paris.
Of particular interest to me , was this wonderful rendition of a Manhole Cover.

I've got a piece that purports to be Hiroshige, but may be a fake. I've also got a very nice little print of Miyajima by Kawase Hasui.
Hiroshige's Yui is probably my single favorite piece of art anywhere, ever.

There's a place of balance between "overly wordy" and "cryptic" that maybe one could aim for. I didn't see anyone suggesting this needed to be expanded into a short essay, but some clue would have been nice. The one counter suggestion expanded to a whole eight words. I skipped clicking the link myself and went right into the comments hoping for some clue what it was about.
Are you honestly suggesting that the appropriate response to a cryptic one word link is to go do a separate google search on the link term?
